The UI scaling factor is always 1.0 by default in Retina high-dpi modes. Are you using a scaled video mode? If you use the default mode for your monitor, this should never happen.

For example, this is a screenshot of PixInsight on an iMac 5K at the default resolution:

As seen on the 5K monitor, the UI is not big at all. It is just the normal size for a 2560x1440 27" monitor. The same result should be obtained on any Retina display at the default resolution.

Now my scale factor is 4.00 and everything is so large I cannot change it through the UI. Where is the preferences file stored and is it human-readable/editable?

Press the Control key, then click the PixInsight icon on the dock (or the PixInsight.app bundle). Without releasing the Control key, select Open. Answer yes to reset all PixInsight settings.

I guess the answer to your question is yes, I am using a scaled video mode. I am on a MacBook Pro with Retina display. In Display preferences, I have the Resolution set to "Scaled: More Space". I absolutely do not want to change this to the "default mode for [my] monitor".

In previous versions of PixInsight, the UI was an appropriate size relative to other UI elements. Now the Pixinsight UI is at least twice as large in each dimension as it should be. So, it seems to be LESS compatible with Retina displays than it was previously.

And, I am not keen to lose all of my Pixinsight preferences if there is a less drastic way to solve this problem.

Hi Rob,

after loading several fits files into blink... nothing interesting in the console after this...

Bug confirmed. Happens on all platforms when a set of images are loaded with Blink. It's a small issue with the drawing panel on the Blink interface, but has no consequences. I'll fix it next Monday, thank you for detecting it.

So, I found the preferences file and used a plist editor to set the scaling factor from 4.0 back to 1.0 and this seems to have fixed the problem entirely! Now the UI elements are scaled properly. The key here is it must be manually set to 1.0. If automatic UI scaling is turned on it is too large.

And, I am not keen to lose all of my Pixinsight preferences if there is a less drastic way to solve this problem.

I don't know why you had a UI scaling factor of 4. Did you set this factor manually before running this version?

No, I did not set it to 4 until I started trying to solve this issue. It had been set to automatic and when I upgraded the UI elements were too large, as I reported earlier.

To fix the problem, I set it to manual to try to fix. I first tried entering a value less then 1.0, which it would not accept. Next, I tried 2 and it seemed to make no difference, so then I tried 4.

The issue is that PixInsight is apparently NOT automatically setting it to 1.0 with my Display preferences configured as stated earlier. It is apparently automatically setting it to 2.0. So, I finally figured out that if I set it to 1.0 manually and keep the automatic scaling turned off, the UI is properly sized.

3840×2400, which is 4/3rds the unscaled resolution, I think.

Also, what is your monitor resolution (with the scaled mode that you have enabled) ?

In my case - MacBookPro with Retina - 2880*1800. OSX scale setting - 1920*1200.

PI (ver 1.8.3) works with workspace as 2880*1800, PI (ver 1.8.4 with Scale Factor - 1.0) works with workspace as 1920*1200 only.

Is GPU support integrated into this? 

If not, what is the estimated  time till it will be included?

Just checking before I download:  is this version compatible with Windows Vista?  It's not included in the file description.

I've d/l'd the entire file successfully twice.  Each time the installer generates the following error dialog:

Error opening file for writing:

... PixInsight/bin/Annotation-pxm.dll

Click Abort..

I've uninstalled PI before installation..
