After installing the new release + updates and running/closing PI I noticed my computer was slower in responding and resources were being used even though no applications were running.  I then opened up Win7 task manager and see that the PI process is still running and using memory as per the attached jpg screen grab.  The PI process stays in memory 5 to 10 minutes after closing and then either shuts down or Win7 shuts it down.  Is this normal?  I don't remember seeing this with the previous release.

Please advise...

No, this is not normal at all. Of course this doesn't happen under normal conditions. I cannot reproduce it on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

The XISF image format is much more slower to write, compared to FITS files. Is it something normal?.

XISF supports data compression. With compression enabled, especially with the zlib codec, writing is obviously slower. Without compression XISF should be somewhat faster than FITS for writing with default parameters.

I use the new Pixinsigh on a Macbook Pro 13" NON retina (1280x800), and the new UI keeps expanding beyond the edge of the screen. When it starts it looks fine (see image 1 bellow),but as soon as I load anything it automatically expands beyond the edge and can't be resized (see image 2 bellow).

See the Video Hardware section of the System Requirements page. Your screen resolution is well below the reasonable minimum requirements. You'll need to reorganize and/or close tool bars to reduce the requirements in horizontal resolution. You may also need to close some explorer windows, or move them to the right side. Working in full screen mode is also a good idea to maximize available space, as well as using a non-native menu bar to increase the dimensions of maximized images. All of these customizations will help you using PixInsight on a very small screen.

This was not the case in the previous version. I also do processing on a Mac mini on a 1920x1080 screen which of course doesn't show this. But when I'm not at home and want to work on some images (and do other things at the same time), switching to full screen is not a good option for me. We know it can work as when the application starts it is fully contain within the screen and has ">>" to expand tool bars. Only after actually doing something does the toolbar auto-expand beyond the screen. I totally understand that this is not a priority for you. But as it display properly on launch I wonder if some variables in the code get change/corrupted after performing an action (or a property is set in QT for the toolbar to a "new" value that is not what was there at launch time).

Another data point.

Open up PI close PI.  The task stays active after close as reported by task manager.  If you try to open PI again w/o killing the "closed" PI via task manager PI will not open.

Are you sure your running the latest version? I used to have the same issue but since PI started using the latest QT around version 1171 I have not seen this happen once.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest which after running once or twice initiated another update from within PI.  So yes as far as PI is concerned it's up to date.

Hi ftherrmann,

most complex applications need some time for cleaning up when closed. After the window is closed the process spends a little time closing files and network connections, freeing memory, saving preferences, removing temporal files, etc. PixInsight takes more time doing this than other applications, but, at least in my computer, it is only a few seconds.

I have good news: this focus stealth problem is now fixed on OS X and Windows. To be fair, the bug was entirely mine, not a Qt one. The next version of PixInsight, which is due this week, will of course include this bug fix. Thank you for your patience.
