Hi,
I updated to 1.8 and so far have been unable to access the Cascading Style Sheet.  On first opening PI 1.8 there were 3 updates to install one of which referred to CSS.   After installing these I expected CSS to be found under Preferences but cannot find it anywhere in PI.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled PI and the updates several times without success and do not know what else to try.   Would be grateful for help with this.

Hi Pete, welcome to the forum.

I don't know well, but I think that css is an editable document:

* Refactored user interface. The PixInsight Core application has now a complete separation between appearance and functionality. Every aspect of the user interface (colors, fonts, margins, item spacing, etc.) can now be restyled by editing a CSS (cascading style sheet) document. As part of this refactoring work, all core application icons have been replaced by a new set with improved coherence and readability.

By sure you have it instaled but it is no longer controled from global preferences. You can access it from script editor in PixInsight>doc
it is something that, by sure, i am not going to touch. :o

Saludos. Alejandro.

Hi Alejandro,
Thank you for clarifying that.  With my very limited computer skills, I will certainly not try to amend that file and will put up with the standard desktop.

The way I've envisioned a first implementation of "layers" in PixInsight is a simple window where you can define a list of views, one "on top" of another (order matters), and also define a mathematical operation between a view and the view right above it, or choose from a number of predefined typical operations, and last an "amount" (opacity in Adobe's jargon). Then you can apply to get the resulting image and if there's an imaging god, also have a realtime preview as you adjust operations/amount.

Basically, a toned-down version of PixelMath with the UI oriented to view names and operations between them.

Something like that.

That doesn't seem too complicated, yet, it might be a useful tool, particularly to those who find tedious having to do these things in PixelMath. Or am I looking at this wrong and is in fact a silly idea?

RBA's idea strikes me as being very useful. I think that would be a helpful way to implement PixelMath. I like to do things in visual ways, even physical-like ways, such as with buttons and sliders, rather than in a command-line-like way. (I guess that's because I've never been a programmer). This idea for a GUI-ish way of implementing PixelMath will, I think, encourage more people to use it.

I also like the idea of an `opacity' control, since that's like using PixelMath to blend two versions of an image. Instead of typing in blending coefficients and `multiplication asterisks', the user could use the `opacity' slider, a la Adobe. Again, I think a lot of users would find themselves more likely to use the tool if it had this sort of interface.

Just to clarify, my particular suggestion is not so much a PixelMath replacement with a more "intuitive" GUI, but a tool that lets you combine several images in a more "visual" style, where you can apply typical PixelMath operations between one image and the one on top. In short, the "layer paradigm" implemented in a simple, yet, I believe, effective way.

Juan, as you point out, the above idea (and an even more detailed "true" layers implementation) adds very little to the PixInsight platform in terms of image processing. But - now referring only to this simplified version of layers - it does provide a more intuitive interface for a not uncommon use of PixelMath operations (not limited to retouching/editing, btw). The reason I mention it is my belief that this shouldn't be hard or too time consuming to write, and possibly not conflicting (much at least, I'd hope) with your vision of quality, usefulness, and high standards for the PixInsight platform.

Better than that, although the UI wouldn't be nearly as fancy as other implementations of layers, it would be close enough to be offered as a "weapon" (if that's in fact a plus), and better yet, even more powerful in some regards, as it allows you to define the math operations that are applied, as opposed to being restricted to a limited number of predefined operations (screen, darken, etc).

On top of that, more advanced features could be added later on, say for example, instead of defining a math operation between two views (layers), also being able to define a process icon as the operation.

It might not be the layers UI many people would like to have, but I'd much rather have the above tool available, than a fancy UI implementation that lacks that functionality. I don't remember the exact look of the screenshots you once posted a while ago, but I remember seeing only predefined operations (screen, lighten, etc), which was somewhat disappointing.

Anyway, just some ideas...

Have you seeing the former PixelMath tool in PixInsight LE? Is that what you want (revamped)?

Yes, I've seen/used it, and I was very thankful for the newer version. That should answer your question :-)

I'll try to do a mock-up...

Hi
I use SHO script to mix a super luminance of 3 images (and more in the 2nd part of the window script)
I can choose coefficients and "photoshop" like layer method.
It use PIXIELMATH operation, only.

I could not resist to try the newest release on older data, works fine on my system except one thing - it keeps on crashing at the moment when I close the file after saving. I have tried to reinstall, but it did not solve the problem.

Philippe,

I have been wishing for a script like this for a long time. Any chance you could share it?

I would be forever thankful and call it the "Philippe Master Script" :D

Hi Matt

the script is included in the RC4 and now RC5 release. So you can have the source code.

If I am at the origin of this script idea, it has been completely written by my friend Laurent :
http://www.felopaul.com/

He will be happy to share with you some idea if you want to participate to add some features to the script  ;)

Cheers
Philippe

The SHO script does not run for me in RC5, it produces the following output in the console:

run --execute-mode=auto "C:/Program Files/PixInsight/src/scripts/AIP-Multichannel/SHO-AIP.js"

Processing script file: C:/Program Files/PixInsight/src/scripts/AIP-Multichannel/SHO-AIP.js
** Warning [156]: C:/Program Files/PixInsight/src/scripts/AIP-Multichannel/SHO-AIP.js, line 1092: assignment to undeclared variable key
*** Error [000]: C:/Program Files/PixInsight/src/scripts/AIP-Multichannel/SHO-AIP.js, line 52: Error: Control.Set(): invalid argument type: unsigned integer value expected.

Win7 - 64 Ultimate, 16GB RAM,

I'd appreciate any suggestions of what I am doing wrong or how to fix this.

Regards
Derrick

Hello
It happened to me too on win7 64 (but not on OSX)
It doesn't come from the script but from the PI update cache (or something else, I don't know)

Under PI Global preference, look where the 2 caches are located (swap storage and Downloads directory)
Under windows explorer, erase all cache directory of Pixinsight (Pixinsight64-update, PIwebicons, tmp cache...)

Run Pix (or reinstall RC5)
Pix will recreate new directories (and will reload updates)
SHO will run again :o)

cheers

Hi Philippe,
thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate your help.

Unfortunately the suggested solution does not work for me - I deleted the PI temporary files and 3 cache directories then uninstalled PI, rebooted the machine, installed RC5, reset PI settings, launched PI and installed 5 updates but still get the same error as before.

It's no ta great problem to me because the majority of narrow band targets are still some weeks away; maybe the PI developer(s) will be able to unravel the problem when they return from their short break.

Once again thanks for trying to help

Regards
Derrick
