Constant crashes and can't apply updates. Frustrated.
« on: 2016 October 07 21:08:27 »
Hey all, has anyone been able to install this on a mac?

I'veDone the following:

downloaded the software
copied the folder to my applications directory
launched the software
It pops up a window saying "You have 17 updates!"  (I am running Mac OS 1.9.5 so I downloaded the appropriate version:
PI-macosx-x86_64-01.08.04.1195-20151218-t.zip

So I apply the updates, it says "17 succeed, 0 failed"

Click on ok

Segmentation Violation, and the software crashes.  Sometimes it wrecks the license file, sometimes it doesn't.

So if I re-launch the application, then check for updates, and DO NOT INSTALL them, just click ok...

Segmentation Violation.

If I don't touch the updates, and try using the software as is:

I select process, and Star Alignment
Select my reference frame
Load in all of my other frames
Select a new directory to save the results
Click the circle (ok)

The console appears to process several of the images, then the application just crashes.  No Segmentation violation this time, it just dies.

I've tried re-installing the software, I've tried using the version of software for Sierra...

I have seen some youtube videos, and WANT to like this software, but for the price it really shouldn't be this buggy and unstable.  Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be wrong?

Thanks-

Lightpath.

have never used mavericks (which is what i think you are referring to)... i have used pixinsight exclusively on a mac for years and years and have never seen anything like you are describing.

do you have any 3rd party kernel extensions installed? what kind of mac is it? it's very strange...

This is not reproducible on any of our working and testing machines.

Please note that OS X 10.9 is no longer a supported platform, see our System Requirements. That said, many of our users still work with PixInsight on 10.9 without problems.

The behavior you are reporting is not normal on any platform. Obviously PixInsight is a stable application, otherwise we wouldn't have several thousands of commercial users. Have you considered the possibility that something on your machine is causing these problems?

For the price you probably shouldn't have a powerful, solid software application in constant evolution, available without documentation on four platforms with unlimited updates, which you can install and use on any machine you own, on any supported platform, with a single license.

"which you can install and use on any machine you own"

Can you please explain this because I can't get it to run on either of my macs, and I have to reauthorize my license every time I run it on one or the other, to try to figure out why it's constantly crashing.  My second Mbp is the same hardware as the first, but running 10.11.6.

"Could not duplicate bug closed"  Honestly I'm surprised by your tone towards customers in this, and other threads I  have read here.

Do you have any thoughts as to what log files I could look in to figure out why it's seg faulting all over the place, or is it just my fault and you have other things to do?

Have a look at my post in this forum - getting the same problems with my Mac Pro - seems to happen when I try and run process modules - but not consistently

in the "Console" application (not a terminal, I really mean the application named "Console") you should find the full crash report with the backtrace and all (on the left, in the section "user diagnostic reports"). Maybe that would give some insights to Juan about what's going on.

Hey, thanks!  I'll give this a look.

I had it working on my work laptop (MacOS 10.11) but once i tried again on my home PC the license file got corrupted, and now I have to reactivate the license again.  Even backing up the license file doesn't appear to work.

But at least I may have some crash data.  I'll check it out, thanks.

The time I had it running, when I didn't try to update, I got part way through a youtube video tutorial and was doing well, but then I got a seg fault on one of the modules as well.

I'll check out your post.

Does anyone know what the permissions/owners should be set to on the various files/executables PixinSight uses?

looks like you're hitting a double free bug, but you need to give the backtrace of the thread marked as "Crashed", somewhere after what you copy/paste

I have to reauthorize my license every time I run it on one or the other

Since you are using a trial license, you can only run PixInsight on a single machine and platform at a given time. This is by design. See FAQ 2.19:

http://pixinsight.com/faq/

As noted in FAQ 2.19, this restriction does not apply to commercial licenses. See FAQs 2.5 and 2.6. See also FAQ 2.10 for the procedure to move your trial license to a new machine. Alternatively, you can request a new trial license with a different email address (for security reasons, our system does not allow two or more licenses associated with the same email account).

"Could not duplicate bug closed"  Honestly I'm surprised by your tone towards customers in this, and other threads I  have read here.

That's just how software development and bug fixes work. To solve a nontrivial problem, I need to understand it first. Normally, to understand a problem and find a suitable solution, I need to reproduce it on at least one of my working and testing machines. This is not the case in your bug report: I cannot reproduce a similar behavior on any machine and operating system. I have several machines running up-to-date installations of OS X 10.10 and 10.11, and PixInsight works very well on all of them.

Instead of providing useful information to help me understand why the problem happens, you said "for the price it really shouldn't be this buggy and unstable". That's not very nice of you. I work hard on PixInsight to build a powerful and solid image processing platform. If you think that the price is high, there are much cheaper solutions in the market, including many gratis products. Honestly, the price of a PixInsight license is quite low in my opinion, considering the capabilities of the software and the way we give our users freedom to install and use it on unlimited machines and four operating systems, with unlimited updates.

I understand your frustration. However, please understand also my frustration each time I receive a complaint because of a problem that I am unable to solve since I cannot reproduce it. In most cases these issues are caused by elements external to PixInsight. This includes misbehaving third party software such as drivers, utilities, wrong system updates and malwares, as well as failing hardware. In other instances there are problems caused by our supporting software tools, including compiler bugs and bugs in third party libraries, although in the latter case the issues are usually easily reproducible. The world of software development is hard for a complex multiplatform application; there are simply too many things that can interact badly, in surprisingly weird and unexpected ways.

The only thing I can do is to release a new version, hopefully better and more stable. I am doing the same since 2004, when I released the first version of PixInsight LE. The next version 1.8.5 will hopefully be released somewhere before Christmas. It will use at least Qt 5.7.0 (version 1.8.4 uses Qt 5.5.1) and much evolved versions of our own development libraries.

Yes, this is a memory deallocation error. Questions:

- Are you running some virus protection software? Any other system utilities running as background processes, besides those included in the operating system?

- Do you have full read/write permissions on your home folder?

- Can you launch PixInsight from a terminal? Open the Terminal application and enter these commands:

$ cd /Applications/PixInsight/PixInsight.app/Contents/MacOS/
$ ./PixInsight&

Let's see if you get some messages on the terminal.
