Vertical column defect removal
« on: 2015 June 09 12:04:54 »
I'm trying to process my friend's image of M83 and need some help in cleaning vertical column defect. I see it already after calibrating and registering images and after background extraction this defect is even more emphasized. Here's how it looks like:

Overall I have 10 bias, 10 dark, 10 flat and 24 light frames... I know more bias, darks and flats needed, but this is all what he did... All that was imaged using SBIG STF-8300C camera.

What can I do for getting ride of this defect? What is the cause for such column?

Thank you!!! :)

For starters you should remove column defects per individual image frame. Calibrate using calibration frames then remove the column defects. Then continue with star alignment, stacking, and other processing.

mkalika, read up on defining bad columns in CosmeticCorrection's Defect List. After calibration, CC will fill in the values of the funky column with the average of surrounding pixels. Works very well!
Best always, Warren

Mkalika,

Another solution that works well, though you have to do a rotation, is the CanonHorizontalBanding script.  It is not just for Canon's but works on any image.  Only issue is you would need to rotate your frames 90 degrees to make the lines horizontal.  But having done that, the script works surprisingly well, both in the linear and the stretched phases of your processing.

Best,

Jim
