Cheap trick / Starmasks

I've always found it hard to make a proper starmask, including the larger stars (scale>7), but now I've found a solution:

Clone the image your working with.

Resample it to 50% scale.

Make a starmask (a lot easier).

Resample the starmask to 200% scale.

Voila!
