Can RA and DEC coordinates appear in stacked fit image?
« on: 2014 November 30 14:55:12 »
Hi

I've chosen to save my DSLR images as fit files in Sequence Generator Pro, and thus the RA and DEC coordinates are stored in the FITS header of every frame. But I've also noticed that the stacked images resulting from those fit frames doesn't have the RA and DEC coordinates.

So, the question is if RA and DEC coordinates can appear in the stacked fit image and how can it be done?

Thanks for your help,

Alfredo

you can use ImageSolver to solve your stacked image; it will add the WCS coordinates to the FITS header.

Thank you Rob

I tried it but the image couldn't be solved. I gave it the same RA and DEC coordinates (J2000) of the frames collected in the imaging session and set the parameter to J2000. Also the correct image scale and pixel size of the camera.

The message at the end was that the given coordinates were far from the actual metadata of the image, which doesn't make sense.

Any ideas?

Hi Alfredo
Try dropping the limiting magnitude at the bottom of the ImageSolver panel.

well, if imagesolver can't solve the image, then it does not know anything at all about what the coordinates of the image are. so the text is only making the suggestion that perhaps the reason it could not solve is that because the synthetic star field that it downloaded is too far away from the actual center coordinates of the image, whatever they actually are.

geoff's suggestion is good. another thing you can do is change the star sensitivity threshold in ImageSolver (under the advanced tab). one way to figure out how to set that control is to use StarAlignment in "Detected Stars" mode. the parameter "Log (sensitivity)" under the Star Detection pane of StarAlignment is the same control in ImageSolver's "star sensitivity". you can use StarAlignment to see if the stars that were detected are really stars. if they are hot pixels or other artifacts then ImageSolver will never be able to make sense of the image.
