DSLR Orientation
« on: 2014 October 23 10:07:32 »
Does PI 'care' about the image orientation in the Exif data from images?

For example, I have some frames that say 'Rotated 270 degrees'. And I have some that say 90, for example.

I assume this property is a 'hint' to photo display programs so that if I take a picture in portrait mode it renders that way in Lightroom (or what have you).. I further assume that the data in the RAW file is unaffected by the camera's detection of rotation.

When I 'dump' all my light, flat, dark, and bias into BPP the various orientations in the Exif are irrelevant? Maybe I'm overthinking this.

Not sure which way  is up  :o

i think DCRAW (which underlies the DSLR Raw compatibility in PI) either ignores this completely or PI is asking it to ignore the rotation.

probably that's the right thing to do as the images would then randomly have the wrong geometry if the camera has orientation turned on in it's firmware and the camera moves as the scope tracks.

Yes, that makes sense.

I opened one of my NEF (Nikon RAW) in PI and it is displayed in 'landscape' rather than 'portrait' even though the Exif rotation is 270 degrees. Should have thought of that earlier, although I can't see what's going on behind the scenes in BPP.
