The Moon Oct. 4/5
« on: 2014 October 06 08:14:00 »
I couldn't figure out how to register images of the moon in PI (if someone can tell me, please do so! I am all ears).  However, I did all processing of the stacked image in PI.  In particular I found the RestorationFilter worked GREAT to recover detail in the image, LocalHistogramEqualization did a good job on the contrast and brightness and TGVDenoise was very effective for preserving detail during noise reduction.

using the FFTRegistration script will probably work, it's worth a try anyway.

for certain lunar images i think people have had luck with StarAlignment, but the parameters have to be tweaked such that it can pick up bright features on the moon as "stars"

Hi Ron
You can use Staralignment; try following settings:

Star detection:
  scales: 8
  peak resp.: 0.90
  max. distortion: 0.050

I often get good results with those ones.

Following links may help you too (they helped me doing all the work in PI!):

Ron,

You may find a previous post of mine helpful, it includes Staralignment settings:
