Comet alignment and AVI creation
« on: 2014 September 09 07:21:05 »
I have some raw DSLR data of comet Jacques I obtained at the end of last month. I am pretty new to comet processing and this part of PI. I tried the comet alignment module, but when I load the calibrated FITS, none of the dx,dy columns get populated. Also, what does the module exactly do? Does it align on the stars, or the comet? The DSLR data were calibrated in PI as well. Sorry if I'm asking very basic questions but I am new to comet processing.

Thanks,
Nick

Hey Nick,

Check out Harry's "comet stacking" tutorial at the link below. In his video he shows how to use the comet alignment module which will register all of your images to the comet. When you load your files, the module automatically sorts the images by time. Double click on your first image to open it up and then click on the comet nucleus to specify the location at the star time. Then do the same for the last image in your sequence and the X, Y values will be automatically populated, indicating the position of the comet for the images in between - probably linearly interpolated. The end result are subframes registered to the comet. Harry's video is a great resource for learning this process.
