Newbie Question
« on: 2014 January 27 05:16:39 »
I just started using a trial subscription yesterday.  My first impression is that I will be dumping my other software for processing after my first couple of clicks.  I can see the learning curve will be quite steep to become and expert.  I do have a couple of questions, though after my initial use of the program.

First, what are the limitations of the trial subscriptions.  I could not save any file that was later viewable.  Is this normal for the temporary license?

I had difficulty with calibration and registration as I kept getting an error message about no  existing output file, even if I created a new file prior to trying calibration and registration.

I was able to use a stack that had been aligned with another program and initially stretch it to a very nice grayscale image, but could not get any color in it.  Where do you go after the initial stretch?

Thanks for the help,

RCH

There should be full functionality in the trial version.
I was like yourself when I first started out and tried to use some of the programs I used before that I was comfortable with in conjunction with PI (for example, trying to align in 1 program first, etc). My suggestion is to try and sever  this "umbilical cord" and do everything in PI. That will actually make things easier for you and you will learn faster.
Here is a link to some useful video tutorials. http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthome.html
There are many others out there.
Enjoy the journey!

If your problem is that when you re-open a file saved with PixInsight it is completely black, then you probably saved it with the ScreenTransferFunction active. STF doesn't change the contents of the image but it only applies a temporal stretch that is not saved with the image. If this is the case you should re-apply the STF after reopening the file, or apply a permanent stretch using HistogramTransformation before saving it.

This should be in the FAQ of PixInsight.
