Possible to do a manual gradient mosaic merge?
« on: 2012 January 31 05:04:56 »
GradientMergeMosaic is wonderful, but decent sized images won't have enough memory in XP32.  Is there some way I could apply a geometric dimming of the overlaying image (for say a hypothetical 2 image mosaic) down to black then do a Pixelmath operation on the previously aligned images to achieve a very similar result?  I'd thought about creating a suitable gradient image in photoshop and doing the "gradient dimming" step using PI, but suspect there might be a more elegant way of achieving this?

(I KNOW, I KNOW - I need to get my act together and get Windows 7 or Linux installed.... :-[)

Any thoughts appreciated.....
It's frustrating the PI will happily hold many of these large images, but GMM quickly runs out of memory when it starts to "do it's thang"

What you describe is called "feathering". It can smooth the transition between images, but will not adapt general brightness levels and variations between different zones of the image. For more than 2 images it becomes very difficult to get good results.

Dear Georg,

Thanks for slapping me.  GMM is of course doing much smarter things than a simple feather too I imagine across the length of each seam, especially for >2 images as you say.     :footinmouth:     :sealed:
