Data to practice/learn PI
« on: 2010 September 01 18:22:24 »
Hello all,
I really hope this doesn't offend anyone......and I really don't want to appear to be scamming anyone....yes I am new here so this may not be real well received (I had originally posted the segment below in another thread but that wasn't the proper thread so I reposted here..........

<Which leads me to another thought I have had for a week or so but was a bit hesitant to voice this "thought" on this forum since I am really new.  But, here goes.....

Would it be possible, or even appropriate, for a newbie like myself to "borrow" raw data from a forum member to practice using PI on in lieu of appropriating his or her own raw data???  In my case, I am not quite "ready" to take guided shots (lacking some equipment).

For example, I could see the PI team storing some raw data on the site that people can download for practice (they would have to be a member of the forum to access this).  There could even be some "final PI processed" images to compare back to to see results and if techniques are understood.  Has this been suggested before?  Is something like this beyond the realm of reality?>

Andy

If this is ill-conceived, I apologize.

Hi Andy

There are some sources for raw data... Do a search for Jim Misti. I remember that he had a few very nice raw images online (with various filters). Another good source is the Digital Sky Survey (DSS). They are scanned plates, but is good data to play with. Then, there is the Hubble site, and also ESO shares some data. Finally, you may download the files of the M51 cooperation project. See the post by Yuruy in this forum.
Regards,
