Upgrade policy
« on: 2010 August 27 15:37:56 »
I'm currently on day 5 of the 45 day trial and I must say I am VERY impressed both with Product and the Helpfulness of the PI Community  :D :D

I'm interested in what is the policy on upgrades? If I purchase say v 1.6 will I get upgrades for a fixed period, forever or until the next major release? If the latter what is the cost structure for version upgrades? and when is version 2 scheduled for release?

How often are versions released typically?

Hope this makes sense

Nigel

Hi Nigel

Thanks your your words about PI :)

The current upgrade policy is that users will get free access to upgrades until the 2.0 release. There may be some minor upgrades, bug fixes, for 1.9.x users, but at this stage no new features will be added for them.
There is no official statement about the upgrade cost. It surely will be a fraction of the new product cost.
There is no actual schedule for this major release change... it could be somewhere at the end of 2011, at the current rate.

Right now, each cycle (1.x) takes several months, where minor upgrades are constant. If it is just a bug fix release, it may come a few weeks from the previous. If it will include new features, it may take longer.
Regards,

Carlos Milovic F.

Hi Nigel,

As Carlos says - I wouldn't even worry about the future upgrade cost as and when v2.0.0 comes down the line. Even a 1.9.x 'new user' shouldn't let that dissuade them. Juan has been VERY FAIR with all PI customers, and I would doubt that that would ever change (unless, of course, the radiation from his monitors triggers a 'greedy cell' chain reaction in his brain but, apparently, a good red wine limits that possibility)

In any case, by the time you have to reach for your credit card, the intention is that you will be 'hooked' by the Power of PI. You won't care how much Juan charges by then - in fact you will even pay him in advance, just to get v2 released early :moneyinmouth: :moneyinmouth: :moneyinmouth:
