Decon and Star Mask
« on: 2009 September 25 11:58:47 »
Hi All

I am going to grasp the nettle and have a go so a couple of questions for you

1) When applying a star mask for protection, should it have sharp or soft edges to the mask

2) Does the new deringing deacon mean I do not need background protection/mask

3) How do we decide the std dev and shape of the PSF

And if there is any other advice , just let me have it    O:)

Harry,

I have found that you need soft edges; however, the key is expanding the protection out far enough so it captures the width of the "ring".  This is the tricky part which takes quite a bit of experimentation.

3) How do we decide the std dev and shape of the PSF

For this, I highly recommend reading Juan's tutorial.  It answers the "how to" of finding these two values.

If you don't know how to "calculate" these values, you can use my first script on PI: deconvolution preview. It's under script -> utilities on PI 1.5.5.

This is the thread where I presented the script http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1250.0.

Hi Harry - now I have to decide whether to wait for 1.5.8 - or to just throw a 'quickie' video together for things as they stand. In either case, I will do the video for PJST scripts as they exist at the moment - and then I will try and get my deBayer script updated, in parallel with the work I am trying to do for the Image Calibration script.

I am also planning to move to Spain, preferably next door to Juan. As far as I can see there really IS a major distortion in the space-time continuum wherever Juan seems to be. It is the only logical explanation for the extra 7.3 hours in every day that Juan seems to have available to him (although it really is a shame that any sudden exposure to even dim daylight does tend to cause his skin to blister and his hair to fall out)  ::)
