Pixinsight not starting...

Yesterday I upgraded to the latest version of Pixinsight, that required the reinstallation and reactivation - and the program worked. However, today it is not starting up at all. Any idea what to do?

Sometimes happens to me if there is a instance running in the task manager that closed improperly, I guess.
Try...
Right click task bar and open task manager
Look for PI, if there, terminate it.
Try to star PI again.

You might also try starting a second instance of PixInsight

There was a bug in version 1.8.5 that left a running subprocess sometimes, which has been completely fixed in 1.8.6. If this happens with version 1.8.6 of PixInsight, then something strange is happening. I would check the machine thoroughly with a good (enterprise level) malware detection software. Some bloatware, including vendor-provided utility applications, and especially disk and file management applications, can also attach to running processes and cause these problems. All of this is Windows in its purest state, naturally.

I assume you are running Windows. Assuming also that you have restarted your machine in-between, this is not normal behavior. Applications don't cease to work suddenly without something external intervening to generate a new problem. Check your machine for changes, including Windows updates, which can be buggy, and other applications tampering with application files.

thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes I am running windows, Juan. It is 1.8.6 - i.e. all the updates waiting after I did the big re-install were installed. Yes, I did do a restart between (we are talking about installing it in the evening, having a little play with it, turning the machine off and it's not working when I switch on the next day) I think that windows did do an update between the instances (FWIW, this one: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4493464/windows-10-update-kb4493464).
Would it help if I did a reinstall? if so would I need to do all the license reactivation business again?
