Version 01.08.06 on two machines
« on: 2018 December 29 18:45:31 »
Can the same identifier and license data be used on two different machines that I own? I installed the new version on one machine without a problem but the other machine will not allow me to activate PI license using the same codes. How do I activate the program on the other machine?

How do I activate the program on the other machine?

Copy the license file from the working system to the other one.  The location of the file is documented here: https://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=12986.0

Copied license file as directed and PI still requests an activation code. Do I need to remove and reinstall PI on the troublesome machine?

Dunno, John.  It worked for me and a bunch of other people.  I'd check carefully that you used the right file and put it in the correct location.

I did use the correct file but was thinking about copying the entire directory contents from the working machine to the other one. Good idea?

Which directory do you mean, John?  Assuming you're running Windows you'll have all the application files in "Program Files\PixInsight" and that stuff shouldn't need to be changed.  You could replace all of the "AppData\Roaming\Pleiades" folder but it only contains two files - the initialisation file for PI and the license file.  The license file, PixInsightLicense, is the one you need to replace.  Check the file modification date and make sure it is the new version (or copy over it again with the file from the working system.)

I'm running windows 10. The Pleiades folder on the working machine contains 12 files two are current 2018 files from the install the .ini and the license. On the non working machine only the 2018 .ini and license exist and the license file is the one from the working machine. I will try copying the entire working machines folder contents to the other machine and give it a go. If that doesn't work I'll uninstall pi and try again.

I love challenges when ringing in the New Year. You have a happy one Rick and thanks for the help!

Still no luck. I tried copying the entire directory and still get activation code request. Then tried uninstalling PI, reboot the machine, reinstalled and copied the correct license file to proper directory with same results. Maybe Juan can help me out. I just had this machine (Dell) updated to Win10 version 1809 so I know it's current. I have one working machine so I can still process images but wonder if I am alone with this issue. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

John

During beta testing I installed the new version on my Windows 7 computer first. Everything went as expected. I did the new license email thing, no issues. I wanted to then see what would happen in moving the license to a Windows 10 install. Before doing the install I uninstalled the old PI installation and deleted all remnants of that install including the hidden directories and the old license files. I did not do anything with the registry as I believe PI itself does not rely on that other then for QT maybe. Anyway with all files and folders removed from hidden '\user\"username"\' and '\AppData\Roaming\Pleiades\' I then installed the new version. Here is what I discovered and what worked for me.

Quote
For Windows users.

I removed PI completely from my Windows 10 computer then installed the new version. Since the Pleiades folder was not present I start the new version and then canceled because of the new activation required. Canceling created the folder on exit. I then copied the new license file from my Windows 7 installation to the Windows 10 machine Pleiades folder. Restarted PI and it opened as normal.

Normally the Pleiades folder would be present from the old installation but if someone is installing on a new machine it won't be present. And note that the AppData folder in Windows is normally hidden so some users might have issues when coping the license file.

Mike

I hope this helps.

Thanks Mike, I tried what you suggested but may not have done it correctly. I removed PI and all existing licenses and then deleted the Pleiades folder under user/appdata/roaming. I rebooted my machine and then reinstalled the new version of PI. When I started PI the activation request came up and I cancelled it. I looked in user/appdata/roaming directory no pleiades folder existed to place the license file in. Still no luck.

Are you looking under the right user? Are you logged in as your normal user and do you have admin rights? Here is what the path and the folder looks like for my computers. You could try creating the folder and then coping the license file into the folder. I would not copy the .ini file from another computer as that has specific path information based on the computer that created it. That info could be different.

Yes, my directory path is like yours and I checked all users to see if the folder was created and it wasn't. The administrator rights might be the key.  I'll try running the install as administrator.
