CloneStamp 255 Pixel Limit?
« on: 2018 December 11 21:32:52 »
The maximum radius for CloneStamp is 255 pixels.  I have a few occasions where a radius of a bit more than that would be very helpful.  Are there any tricks to be able to enlarge the radious beyond 255 pixels?

Hi Gary,

Perhaps you could explain the scenario where you need to be able to run CloneStamp at a radius greater than 255 pixels?

That may help us to better understand your issue(s) and offer suggestions.

For example if you want to remove all other objects around a central object (galaxy) in a mask and use a black or white auxiliary image.

I would just use the RangeSelection tool. Here I use the tool twice to achieve that type of result. You can very the parameters to fine tune your results. The second screen shot shows making a mask where everything above a level of .22 is captured with no smoothing. I would use something like this if I had issues with my background.

I'm not saying I haven't used Clone stamp with a large pixel radius but for most image problems I find other tools in PI to be much more precise and much quicker.

Thank you, Mike.
I know RangeSelection, of course. I'll try using it twice. Another solution in this special case would be to use a mask with the Script Game.

One more way of making a mask is with MT. I like using it because it's not grayscale or binary. Of course you can then make a secondary mask from there.

Very interesting way to remove the stars in the mask. I didn't know yet.

Niall Saunders,

My sensor is 4600x3500, so there are a few occasions that I would like to correct bright star halos or even large faint dust motes.  Sometimes vignetting in the corners.  The attached image is an example that brought this to mind again - the halo from Eta Geminorum while imaging IC443.

I have been using masks to handle these over the past few years, it just would be much easier to have a CloneStamp limit of 510 instead of 255.
