Wide Ha test image: from M42 to the Horsehead
« on: 2018 November 18 01:38:12 »
Testing my new Borg 55FL f/3.6 scope with ASI1600mm Pro camera unguided on a Star Adventurer mount.  922 x 30 second subs and 90 x 2 second.  Chroma 3nm Ha filter.  I'm pleased with how deep it went.  Still some tweaking to do on camera spacing and I should put more effort into polar alignment :)

Thats great work and really nice.
Did you do any autoguiding ?
I am thinking of going the same way. Are you in a light pollution area ? Did you also use an light pollution filters on top?
Why did you use 3nm. What about the higher range Ha filters e.g. Chroma Ha 8nm filters?

Thanks!

Thanks.  It was unguided.  I have heavy light pollution at home.  There's no reason to use a light pollution filter unless you are doing wide band imaging.  Narrow band filters cut the light pollution very effectively.  I have used wider NB filters, specifically a Baader set which are around 8nm bandwidth, and I found they didn't reject light pollution and moon glow as much as I wanted.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks, thats very helpful. I will have a look at those filters. I am worried about the high price of the filters though, especially the 3nm bandwith H-a filters.
