Banding in PI Desktop
« on: 2018 September 22 19:55:43 »
This may be something that was always there and I haven't noticed it. With my new system and monitor I am seeing a faint banding on the PI desktop, particularly in the lighter area of the cube design on the screen. To test that it was not a fault as such I created a new RGB image of 1000x1000 px and set each channel to .5 and set this against the area on the PI desktop where I can see the banding. A screen shot is attached. The rending is nice and clear where I have placed the image but the faint banding can be seen on the PI desktop next to the image. You may have to look hard to see it but is definitely there (unless I am losing the plot and imagining things which is quite possible  :) ).

My monitor is an AOC 27" model U2777PQU @ 3840x2160.

Are there any UI settings that I should be looking for?

Thanks,
Rodney.

Yes, the PI Background "cube" image does seem to be a posterised image - take a screen grab and apply heavy contrast see it better.

It has no effect on real images that I work on.

Actually, I don’t see the point of having a distracting design on the desktop. I got rid of it and replaced it with a plane background.

Thanks Mark and Geoff. It's obviously only an aesthetic thing. I like Geoff's idea of a plane background actually so will look at that.
