PI crashes when running StarAlign in Ubuntu 18.04
« on: 2018 August 08 08:55:53 »
Anyone else having stability issues in Ubuntu?  PI has also been crashing when running other modules but most frequently when running SA.  This is a fresh install of 18.04, Ryzen 7, 16 gigs RAM, 1070Ti GPU.  Any suggestions appreciated.  How to disable features/tune PI to isolate issues?  One of the reasons I migrated to Linux was because I read that PI is developed on Linux first then ported to Windows so I thought PI would run better on Linux.

Thanks,
Scott

have you run prime95 and memtest86 to stress test the machine?

I haven't but will give that a try.  the machine was over-clocked about a month ago and the whole OS was crashing but I set everything to defaults and that went away.  Now just PI was crashing.  After posting I changed "Parallel Processing and Threads" from use All to 8 and even before restarting PI SA started working again even though it was still using all processors.  I've restarted PI and it is just using 8 processors when running jobs and hasn't crashed yet.  Could just saving the change to preferences have corrected an issue with the file or something?

Thanks for the suggestions!

that sound to me like some hardware instability - if you limit the # of threads then the load on the machine is lower everywhere - heat production is less and power consumption is lower as well.

do you have any software to measure core temperatures and cpu core voltage? while running prime95 those are interesting things to look at
