Author Topic: "no image crop" not selected but Canon 5DIV RAW opening with overscan areas  (Read 2408 times)

I've upgraded from ~six months ago to current Version 01.08.05.1353 to belatedly process eclipse images from Canon 5D Mark IV.

In DSLR_RAW module, I have chosen "Pure Raw" and "no image crop" is de-selected as per default (not ticked). However, when I open Canon RAW files they open with the overscan region included.

I've attached clip of DSLR_RAW module settings and the image file after it's been opened. If I do select the "no image crop" option I get the same result.

The issue applies to late model cameras 5D Mark IV and 6D Mark II but not when I open files from earlier Canon 6D - they open as expected without overscan area.

Any thoughts - seems wrong to me?

thanks
Phil

my best guess is that the version of DCRAW in PI is too old to parse the newer bodies' CR2 files properly.

apparently dave coffin has abandoned DCRAW and so now it's up to the libRaw guys to add support for newer bodies. juan had announced some time ago that he was rewriting PI's DSLR stuff to use libRaw instead of DCRAW...

Canon 5D mark IV does not appear in the supported cameras list:
https://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/

For any camera that is not properly supported the results can be a bit hit and miss.

Thanks for the replies Rob and Mark. That's a very simple and logical explanation for the issue.

A pity that via DCRAW or libRaw that PI can't effectively support leading Canon DSLRs for the moment. Hopefully not for long.

Hi Phil,

Yes, not for long. I am currently working on a new RAW format support module with libraw instead of dcraw (which has been discontinued). Patience...

Hi there,

Sorry for posting on an old topic -- but this problem seems  to still exist.  The new version of dcraw now properly supports this camera (canon 5d iv), but maybe PI is using the other library now?   Regardless, this bug still exists and it's problematic.  I'm trying to crop out all the overscan area, but this breaks much of the workflow. Is there any chance of this being fixed?

Currently the new RAW module is not yet part of PixInsight, but you can install the module as an update, see:

Yes and I can report that the new RAW module works great with 5D IV RAW files.
