Install and run PI on external SSD
« on: 2017 December 28 02:42:20 »
Hi there,

I was searching for this but did not found the right information that helped me... may somebody can help me?

I run PI on my workstation normally, but sometimes I like to do so with my laptop on the sofa ;)

I us e a little 13" MBpro with a really small HD inside. And I run out of disk space pretty soon (normally I have around 30 to 40GB left)
Since it has UBS-C 3.1 and I also have such an external SSD, I would like to run PI directly from the external SSD. This should not have an serious impact on performance IMO (even dough I do not care that much about performance on my laptop as it is always a trade-off)

In this way PI should just use the external disk. Is this possible?
A) on macOS
B) on Windows

Thanks for any advice and happy processing...

Hi,

I would install PixInsight onto the local drive and then have the swap file(s) and data on the SDD.  When you have finished processing the image you can then move it to other storage so you free up the SDD for your next image.

Hi John,

I tried this out yesterday and it works pretty nice, still testing the next few weeks... a little ashamed as i read about the swap possibility and thought there is maybe a "fully external" possibility 8).
As a nice side effect I assigned multiple swap folders with a nice performance improvement.

Thank you for the fast and helpful response..
