Loading Images into PI
« on: 2017 December 18 19:57:18 »
Hi,
I am new to PI, I use Astroart 6 for image capture and standard calibration (Dark correction, flat fielding, image registration etc.).  I would like to use PI for LRGB combining and other post processing.  Opening my R,G,B, and L files in PI is giving me a lot of trouble.  Astroart saves files in FITS with pixel ranges of 0.0 to 65565.  My understanding is that I must re-scale the images to 0.0 to 1.0 in PI.  I can't seem to make this work.  Saving as TIFF makes the imagse readable in PI but since I lose the FITS header it is hard to use the processes in PI.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

if you open the format explorer and double click on the FITS module, you should be able to set the upper and lower ranges to 0.0 and 65535.0, i think PI will then auto-scale from 0.0 -> 1.0 for you when you open one of these fits files.

Hi Rob,  Thanks for the prompt response. Where do I find the format explorer?  I'm running PI v1.8 trial version set to factory defaults.  I have found Sample format conversion under "processes", but it does not seem to help.

Hi Rob,  Found format Explorer, but entering the upper and lower ranges did not help.
Any further ideas?

Can you put a sample FITS file somewhere it can be downloaded?

Hi Rob, Using "Rescale" I managed to load my FITS files into Pixinsight.  However all the files I load are recognised as "Grey" even though I think FITS header contains the colour channel information (Filter=R-Red).  How can I reassign the data to the correct colour in PI?  It seems I cannot attach my Fits file here, not sure how to get around that limitation.
Tks Grahamh

A grayscale image is what you should get.  That just means it is monochrome.  If you load the red, green and blue masters then you can combine them with LRGBCombination.  You'll need to specify which is the red, which is the green and which is the blue.  LRGBCombination doesn't attempt to guess from the FITS header.  Just disable the Luminance channel and you should be good to go...

The PI Forum won't let you attach a large FITS file.  You should use Dropbox or a similar service if that is needed in future.

Cheers,
Rick.

yes you will need to use dropbox or google drive or what have you to host your fits file and then post the link here.

if you want to get the lay of the land of PI it is probably a good idea to take a look at Warren Keller's book...
