Ripley 1.8.5 freezes menu items in Windows 10
« on: 2017 August 03 14:24:24 »
I just updated to 1.8.5 and found that it freezes my functions in a strange way.  All menu items change color when mouse clicked, but no pulldown appears.  The left side functions seem to work OK.  I cannot exit without using the task manager. Right clicks do nothing.

System is Windows 10 home x64, 8 GB ram.  The install went fine without errors.

Regards,

Charlie

Hi Charlie - sorry to hear that you are having problems.

Did you do a full UN-install of your previous PixInsight version? Rhe new v1.8.5 has an entirely different insstall process that is (unfortunately) totally incompatible with all previous versions - however, the new install process should now (hopefully) make these issues disappear in the future.

So, what I would suggest is a full UN-install of PixInsight, in whatever guise it might currently be sitting in, followed by a full power-cycle of your machine, follwed by a fresh install attempt.

Let us know how you get on.
Cheers,

Hi Charlie,

Are you using the application in full screen mode on a high-dpi screen with Windows 10? This is a known problem, please see the announcement post.

Just exit full screen mode and the issue will disappear. Even better, reset all application settings by selecting the corresponding item on the Start menu (or by launching the application with the Ctrl key pressed). Let me know if this helps.

Possibly Juan!  I did not change the mode from my previous version.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, but did not power cycle.  I will try that and get back.

Please let me know if this is a full screen issue.

This problem is described by the Qt team here:

http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/windows-issues.html#fullscreen-opengl-based-windows

So this is an OpenGL issue (typical problem on Windows). Tomorrow I'll try to fix this issue, and hopefully I'll release a new version for Windows with this problem fixed. For now, I *really* need some sleep!

Juan,

Please get some sleep.  I still have the problem after uninstalling power cycle and reinstalling.  I do not have a 4k or 5k display.  I reduced the display resolution, but it did not fix the problem.  I have another laptop and a Mac, so I don't have to use this one.  I won't update the others until I know it won't cause problems.

Juan and Niall,

I was playing with PI, using the file explorer to open files and an update came through, which I installed.  When reopening PI, the top menus were still not working, but I continued to try.  When I hit the window icon to leave full screen, it worked.  All the menu items started working.  I went to full screen and all menu items worked.  I closed and reopened PI and all items worked.  I believe that I did have the Windows 10 issue you plan to address.

I've got good news!

This problem is now fixed. It's been a bit tricky, but it's now resolved: Menus behave normally on Windows with high-dpi displays in full screen mode.

I'll release a new version for Windows as soon as possible, perhaps today. Thank you for your patience.

Ahah!  I also wait eagerly for this fix.  Also for some reason pixinsight only runs full screen for me with no options to minimize or even access the task bar.  This was also the case in the previous version but i lived with it.  Now without the menus i cannot exit the app and im forced to reboot the computer.  Lol.

Also if I go to process explorer and open something, it disappears when the process explorer closes.

Also discovered i can get to the task bar by using windows key (who thought that would ever be useful)....and surprise, process perviously not visible appears....but again goes away when focus goes back to pixinsight.

Now also discovered if i launch a new instance while first one is running, 2nd instance runs fine also complete with windows minimize and maximize options at the top.  Hmmmmm.  Menus work too.

I can get to task manager to kill the 1st instance to free up about 500mb.  2nd instance continues to work normally....so i have a work around for the time being.

Issue is full screen mode.  Definately causes the issues I reported above.  Did a reset settings back to factory defaults and it works fine now...but going to full screen mode causes the issue again.

Just stretch the pixinsight window to maximize realestate.  Now to put my settings back in. :(
