Author Topic: Cannot open FITS files in Linux -- another library needed?  (Read 3179 times)

I just purchased my commercial license.  During my trial period, I had PixInsight on my laptop (Ubuntu 17.04) and later moved it to my desktop machine (Debian Sid).

On my desktop, I have the ability to open FITS files, but on my laptop, FITS doesn't show on the list of recognized files.  I don't remember if I opened FITS files during the time the trial license was on the laptop.  I apparently deleted some libraries after moving the trial license to the desktop because I had to install gstreamer 0.10 to get PixInsight to run on the laptop.

I have libcfitsio5 installed on both machines.  Is there another library I need to install on the laptop?

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to PixInsight.

Given that your license allows you to install on multiple machines (for personal, non-commercial use) then, if you haven't done so already, I would delete the install that you have on your laptop (which may not be the 'commercial' version, and then download and install the full commercial version in its place.

Remember to keep a copy of your PixInsight license file somewhere safe - so that you can copy it back into each and every machine that you might be using PixInsight on. (If you go to the PixInsight Home page, and then navigate into the Resources section and then down to the FAQ section, you should find links to information about PI licensing queries).

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry that I wasn't clear.  The Linux installer removes any existing installations before installing.  I will, to be sure, delete the folder where PixInsight is installed and reinstall the commercial version for the 3rd time.

I'm not hopeful that anything will be different.  I'll post the results when I get a chance to reinstall.

I have a backup of the license file on a secured cloud account.  :)

Thanks.

No joy!

I deleted the PixInsight installation, downloaded a new installation file and installed it.  File/Open still shows no entry for FITS.  I also tried opening a FITS file from the file browser in PixInsight and got the message "Unknown or unsupported file type: /path/image.fits"

I still think a library is missing.  I'll continue to compare libraries between the machines, but it would be great if someone could let me know what libraries are required to open FITS.

Sorry, I'd love to help further - but I don't run PixInsight on any of my Linux machines, so I have nothing to suggest.

Perhaps someone else can help? Anyone?

Hi,

Somehow your settings have been messed up. Try running the PixInsight application with the --default-modules argument:

$ PixInsight --default-modules

To perform a complete reset of application settings:

$ PixInsight --uninstall

To get help on all command line arguments:

$ PixInsight --help

The above commands assume that you have installed PixInsight with the standard installer program and default settings, which creates a PixInsight launcher script on /usr/bin. Otherwise, cd to the bin installation directory and use PixInsight.sh instead (the binary executable cannot be launched directly).

Let me know if this helps.

With a 1MHz Quad-Core 32-bit core (actually 64-bit, but without a 64-bit kernel) and only 1Gb RAM, I don't think it would be worth my while!

I should force myself to get a dual-boot implementation on my new i7 desktop but, given that I have already had the machine for two months now, and it has only been powered up twice, I would not hold your breath. I just can't seem to break the back of the embedded-micro code that I am developing (and which is taking up all my time) - simply because each new facility that I need to implement requires me to have to go off and learn even more C-code. (I seem to remember having exactly the same issues when I was developing the DSI CMYG Batch DeBayer Script all those years ago - but at least then, I had an excellent 'private tutor' who kindly guided me through the mind-boggling environment of PJSR object-oriented programming  ::) )

Running
Code: [Select]

$ PixInsight --default-modules
did the trick.

Thanks Juan!
