Master Bias Generation
« on: 2017 March 03 16:31:38 »
Hi all,

Once again, i've been reading various tutorials and watching youtube videos where the settings used in different tutorial conflict with each other.

So just wanted to get some clarity on MasterBias generation.    When stacking the bias frames, do i want the option to "evaluate noise" enabled or disabled ?

Many thanks,
Rich.

it's entirely advisory so it really does not matter. usually you are interested in noise evaluations when you are doing some kind of pixel rejection; first you integrate without any rejection and see what the SNR increase is, and then as you mess with the rejection sliders you use that as a baseline to make sure you're not rejecting too much data. you want to get rid of hot pixels and other artifacts completely but without so much rejection that you're lowering the SNR of the final stack.

with a bias master you just don't care about that stuff. it is what it is, and usually you don't need any pixel rejection as you don't get cosmic ray hits in the bias frames (on account of them being so short). so there's no reason to pay attention to the SNR boost.

if instead you are talking about the "Weights" setting set to "noise evaluation", you definitely don't want that. for bias frames you want Weight set to "Dont Care" as all frames should be equally weighted at 1.0.
