Converting XISF to FIT format
« on: 2017 January 18 10:45:34 »
I was recently invited to join a scientific research project that involves imaging dwarf galaxies. Two years ago I adopted Pixinsight for all my image processing (previously used CCDStack/Photoshop). Each galaxy requires 40hrs of exposure time (Luminance only). This particular project also requires submission of images in the FIT format. Other than calibration no other processing is performed

The Problem:   After using Pixinsight to calibrate the subframes (190), I discovered that I was unable to save the final image in the FIT format.

Reading through the forum XISF section it appears that Pixinsight cannot directly convert XISF to the FIT format. I'm not particularly thrilled about going back to CCDStack to perform calibration.

I would appreciate any guidance/recommendations on how to solve this problem.

Thanks

Jerry K

I just converted a calibrated frame from XISF to FIT format - no problem here. PI would load the new image and it looks OK. However I didn't check with other programs.

PI warns you that you are going to use a deprecated format and not all of the information will be retained, but you can ignore that warning and go ahead.

actually, you can use the batch format conversion script to convert the entire batch of files…

The loss of data when converting to the FIT format is what concerns me the most. I'll take my concerns to the project manager and see what she has to say....

Thanks for the feedback.
