Warning: Insufficient data storage capabilities: TIFF
« on: 2019 August 07 12:22:57 »
There have been three other posts regarding this warning message, but they did not provide the help I need.

I'm new to PI but have successfully processed an image of M 42 and imported it into Lightroom.  However, there have been several subsequent images that have not been successfully imported to LR.  (They look very dark in LR, like they're unstretched.)

I have been saving the TIFF images in 16-bit unsigned integer and have used the same procedure for processing all the images.  Since the only image that did not receive the TIFF warning message (attached) was the M 42 image, I'm making the assumption the warning message is the key issue.

Can somebody explain why this is occurring on all my images except for one -- the M 42 image?  What could I be doing wrong, and how can I correct it?

Thanks,  Mike

I notice that the embedded colour profile is for a BenQ monitor, I think you need to assign a profile like Adobe RGB (1998) or sRGB to the image before you create the TIFF file otherwise the image will not look correct.

Why the need  to export your PixInsight image into LightRoom? What extra advantage is it that you feel cannot be achieved in PI itself?

Hi Mike,

The TIFF format does not support many features and metadata items implemented in PixInsight, including the ability to store image properties, such as display functions (also known as screen transfer functions, or STF). If your image was in linear state when you saved it, other retouching and painting applications, such as LightRoom, won't be able to represent it correctly. This happens, for example, if you enable a STF and save the image as a TIFF file without applying the nonlinear transformation first (with HistogramTransformation, for example).

I want to thank those who responded.  I appreciate your help.  As I said before, PI is new to me.

1. After looking at my notes, I see that I have been misapplying HT so that I was only stretching images linearly.
2. I have downloaded Adobe RGB (1998) for an ICC Profile.
3. When I become more accomplished, I may be able to finish images in PI rather than Lightroom.

ICC profiles like Adobe RGB (1998) are readily available in PI and generally in other graphics packages so no need to download it
