Omicron Persei
« on: 2014 December 23 14:13:53 »
I'm looking for some help with trying to reduce the visual impact of this very bright star. I've tried the Star Halo reduction script but end up with hard edged dark circles. Any other techniques I can try?

Regards
Andrew

Hi

I've looked at those tutorials but they don't seem to be suitable. They show corrections where all stars are exhibiting a problem where the blue channel was slightly defocussed or maybe the seeing was poorer.

In this case we have one mag 3.8 star against a very faint nebula background and the halo is huge. I would deal with this in Photoshop by lassoing the halo and feathering the selection. I was wondering if there was a better process in PI for generating this type of star mask.

Cheers
Andrew

I too am interested if any solution to your problem was found as I have exactly the same problem as you with the same target or any other that contains a bright star against a faint nebula. The diffraction pattern and the large halos also exclude the use of normal star reduction procedures .
