Success!!!
« on: 2013 December 28 18:21:39 »
Well I finally did it. After days of tutorials and hours of trial and error, I have finally completed my first image from start to finish with PI. I have attached a photo of my work (Dumbell Nebula). It was captured in Narrowband (100 min HA, 100 min OIII and 100 min SII). Calibrated, Registered and stacked in PI. Did some tweaks and voila!! Do you guys have any suggestions on sharpening the image some? I feel it can use some. I tried decon, but the results were horrible. Feel free to critique. Enjoy and clear skies!!  :) :) :) :)

deconvolution is tricky. there's a thread here called "decon deringing wrecks images?" that has a lot of good tips:

you might try using AtrousWavelets to boost wavelet scales 1 and 2 (and maybe 3) just a tiny bit ( <= 0.1 ) thru an L mask. but the best mask is L_mask - stars because any sharpening tends to blow out the star profiles.

I'll second the recommendation for the "deconv deringing wrecks images?" thread. (Happily, Juan shows that it doesn't, at least not if one can find the right settings.)

When you do dive into the wonderful world of deconvolution, I think you'll find that getting the right PSF (Point Spread Function) is a big deal. I have often struggled with this. I'm quite embarrassed to say that I haven't been able to post a new image to my blog in nearly a year, but the last thing I posted talked about this subject:

http://photonshotnoise.blogspot.com/2013/02/2012s-m33-at-last.html

Basically, one of the PI videos from Warren Keller and Rogelio had some tips about the PSF, and those tips *really* helped me! Made it all quite worth the money, IMO.

I haven't done deconvolution in PI 1.8 yet, but if it hasn't changed too much from 1.7, then those tips will probably still be good. (Heck, Warren and Rogelio might have even made the video in 1.8, I can't recall.)
