NGC 1097 in Fornax
« on: 2013 November 27 01:53:33 »
Here's an image of NGC 1097 aka Arp 77, a weird barred Spiral galaxy in Fornax.  The weirdness includes a huge X-shaped collection of 4 jets, an active galactic nucleus surrounded by a ring of star forming regions, and a small elliptical galaxy, NGC 1097A, which is in the process of merging with NGC 1097.

This is approximately 22 hours of LRGB data captured with a Ceravolo 300 Astrograph at f/9 and an Apogee U16M camera.  Processed with PixInsight, of course, using every trick I know including overscan calibration.  The jets are so faint that you can count the number of electrons captured per pixel on your fingers!

Cheers,
Rick.

Very nice Rick.  Really good detail in the core.  The Arp galaxies make a pretty interesting bunch of objects.  I was interested in your remark about overscan calibration, which until now was only hovering at the edge of my conciousness.  I googled it and it looks like a useful tool. There was a nice explanation in IIS.

Thanks very much, Geoff.

I'm a mobile imager so I always have a limited amount of data.  PI allows me to squeeze as much as possible from it!

Cheers,
Rick.
