The Soul Nebula (in colour!)
« on: 2013 April 06 05:48:39 »
Hi folks,

For those who haven't been following my Repaired HSV Separation Script thread I thought it might be fun to share the result in a more generally read section of the forum. The subject is the Soul Nebula and here is the result of applying the processing, as described in the other thread, to my RGB data (5 x 200 seconds in each colour):

Best viewed against a dark background, of course. A 50% 2048x2048 pixel version is available here. And here's the result when I add the Ha data (8 x 1500 seconds):

And the 2048x2048 pixel version is available here.

The Ha was processed to try to keep the overall intensity down while still allowing the star colour to make it through. The original Ha was first "de-starred" and that formed the background layer (Photoshop) with colour applied via a set of curves. Next layer was an LHE version with a radius of 112 pixels, coloured via another set of curves and applied as a Screen layer. The final layer was another version of the original, this time using LHE with a radius of just 16! That produced a somewhat cartoonish image which was coloured by another set of curves but the layer was blended using Photoshop's Color Dodge mode, a blend mode that worked because the layer didn't have the same colour choices as the others. That allowed enhancement of some of the fine structure while suppressing most of the unwanted artefacts. I had a play with the various sets of Curves used to colour the various layers and also modified the exposure to get the blend I wanted. I feel much more comfortable doing that sort of tinkering in Photoshop though I suppose one could obtain the same results with PI. But the result wouldn't have been possible without PI's LHE module.

C&C welcome though I would respectfully ask that you do not edit and repost my images without the courtesy of asking me first. Thanks.

Bob.

Hi folks,

The second image above was featured as Astronomy Picture of the Day today. My first, hopefully not my last!  ;D
