Update fails

I've tried repeatedly to perform an update (Resources > Check for updates > Apply), but it fails. The updates appear to download correctly, but when I restart PixInsight, I get a error pop-up that says it failed to install the updates. The log is as follows:

[2020-09-07 22:57:34] Begin updater1

I tried reinstalling PixInsight, but it didn't help.

Hi Michael,

This cannot be reproduced. This is a machine-specific issue. Poor antivirus applications cause these problems on Windows sometimes. Also check your computer for viruses or some unwanted tasks running as background processes. I would recommend a clean reinstall of Windows, or using a different operating system.

Oops! Yes, of course! ?‍♂️

Then I'll have to eat my previous post to just say that I have never seen this on Linux. This is extremely strange. Questions:

- Which Linux distribution?
- Which desktop manager?
- X11 or Wayland?
- Are you using the nouveau graphics driver? If yes, then we know what happens. PixInsight is incompatible with nouveau; you should remove it and install the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

Thanks Rob for setting me straight!

Juan,

The problem was the nouveau driver, apparently. I switched to the NVIDIA driver and the update completed.

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the positive feedback. The nouveau driver is unstable and does not provide a reliable OpenGL implementation. Unfortunately, it is being installed by default by some distributions, just because it is open-source. Fortunately, getting rid of nouveau and replacing it with the proprietary NVIDIA driver is now a straightforward task.
