Since version 1.8.8-8 I encounter regular crashes on the Qt5WebEngineCore.dll
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core
RAM 32GO
Windows 10 21H1

I am not able to say if it is consecutive to the upgrade of windows to 21H1 or the upgrade of Pixinsight to 1.8.8-8, but this error is regular
 
This cannot be reproduced. We have updated all of our Windows 10 machines to version 21H1 (build 19043) and have seen no problems at all with current PixInsight versions.

Issues with QtWebEngine on Windows are typically caused by outdated or buggy graphics drivers. Sorry but this has to be regarded as a machine-specific issue unless a repeatable pattern can be provided.

I have signaled already that this is totally repeatable. It happens every time, on all my machines.

On my laptop and on my desktop and on the pc of a friend of mine I do have exactly the same error. All my drivers are perfectly ok.
I have signaled this already before, but as the consistent application crash happens when exiting PixInsight it does no real harm, so I did not insist.
But I do confirm it is repeatable, and it happens on a lot of Windows computers, if one REALLY checks the Event Log on the windows 10 computer. There is always 1 Error and two additional messages. Always, perfectly repeatable.

It happens every time I close PixInsight, and even in two forms . This is how to provoke the error (so please do not answer that is it is not reproducable). And yes, in previous versions the Application Crash was also happening already.

First Case : If one opens pixinsight, and does nothing, and closes is directly this is what appears in the eventlog :

Bug confirmed. We are now able to reproduce both crashes (in kernelbase.dll and Qt5WebEngineCore.dll) on one of our Windows 10 machines by opening PixInsight and closing it immediately. Note that kernelbase.dll is a system component, not part of PixInsight.

What graphics adapters do these computers use? We can only reproduce the problem on a machine with an NVIDIA card, but not on others with AMD cards. Do the crashes also happen after a reasonable time using PixInsight, say 5 minutes for example?

We think this problem has started to happen after recent Windows updates, but are investigating it.
 
My eventlog stops at 20 februari, and there the error message was present already.

My desktop has a NVIDIA card, my laptop too. RTX 2070.

One gets the error messages also after working a long time on PixInsight. When exiting the program, there as an Application Crash registered in the evenlog.
 
I just checked my Windows 10 x64 event logs and found these events all the way back to 2 Nov 2020 when I was still on PI 1.8.8.6, and they continue through 1.8.8.7 until today. I also have an Nvidia card (1050Ti, driver version 456.71). I was not aware of any of these errors, they were not manifesting while PI was running - until very recently when I had one instance of a Qt5WebEngineCore.dll error while running PCC. This was not reproducible after restarting PI.

I reported what seems to be the same problem (or one very closely related to it) on https://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?threads/crash-on-exit-in-kernelbase-dll-on-windows-10.16860 where you have the full software versions. I have two computers where I see the crash, but only one has an NVIDIA card:
  • a desktop PC with NVIDIA GTX 1080 and, on the motherboard, an Intel UHD Graphics 630 which is not used
  • a laptop with Intel HD Graphics 620
I mostly get crashes related to KERNELBASE.dll but once in a while, also the one in Qt5WebEngineCore.dll.

This bug is now fixed. No more crash reports on exit on Windows 10. The fix will be part of the incoming 1.8.8-9 version of PixInsight. Thank you for your patience and support.
