Background Modelization without a background...?

Hi all PI enthusiast!
I have a doubt tha occured to my for the first time when I took an image of a detail of M31 galaxy with a Newton D=500 mm and Focal Lenght= 2.500 mm: although I used a full frame sensor (Sony Alpha7S), the focal lenght is so long that I had no dark sky on the background.
So I had to find a proper way to model the background:
- If I chose DBE, I didn't know where to put the key points because I had no constant level of background to choose...
- I tried with ABE process, both subtracting and dividing, and I had the results here attached
My question is: is ABE process the best way to model the background in this situations when there isn't enough dark sky on the background?
Any suggestion will be appreciated, thank you all!
