General / bring two images together
« on: 2017 March 26 09:54:20 »
I need some guidance here.  I have an image of the sky showing the stars all perfect.
I also have another image of the same part of the sky but with an image of a comet that I tracked.
The two images can't be put together because of the tracking of the stars being different than the comet.

How do have that beautiful comet sit in the middle of the beautiful sky with alll those nice stars.

Must be a way.

Thanks for any guidance.

General / Color for M42
« on: 2017 February 21 05:57:42 »
What is the key method in trying to get the red color in M42.

I have worked M42 for some time now and I only see a blue or white color.  Maybe brown.  But no red.
Examples of what M42 should look like show lots of red around the center.

Perhaps there is one feature of pixinsight that will do that for me.

General / Jpeg image
« on: 2017 February 04 17:17:04 »

I want to save an image I am working on which is a color image,  and I want to save it as a jpeg file.
I saved it as a jpeg only to end up with a black and white image very low in contrast .  It needs to be worked on to get it to be like my color image.

Is there a simple file that can make this into a color Jpeg image?   And an image that won't need any more work?

General / H alpha and 'L' Luminance files
« on: 2017 January 21 13:08:39 »

I have been going through Harry's tutorial and looking at other postings as well - and Luminance files are mentioned a lot.
I am not sure what is meant when I am told to use my Luminance file.  Or my H alpha file.

I am not completely lost though  because I think it is the 'gray' file that I get when I break down the colors .  I get a gray file and the R G B files.  Is the grey file the luminance file?

If someone could explain how to get a Luimance layer or / and a H alpha  file   it would be appreciated.

General / flat Frames
« on: 2017 January 16 08:29:07 »

I need some direction on how to properly make flat frames.

I have a commercially made box to use to make the frames so that is not the problem. What the problem is,  is what is the exposure for making these flat frames.

I am being told that the exposures will be the same as the light frames.  Along with same temperature and ISO..
If so,   that is easy to do and straight forward.

Others have said  NO..  You have to make your exposures such that you can see the vignetting produced my your camera in your image.   In other words,  you have to take a whole series of pictures until you are satisfied that the exposure will show clearly  the vignetting in your image.

I have also read other statements such as - you let the camera decide what the exposure will be??  I am confused with that statement.

So - this is where I am at.  I have been making up the flats simply by using the same exposure  as my lights.  But I am willing to throw  that out if that is wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

General / Harry's Tutorials
« on: 2016 December 21 13:37:10 »
I have been following Harry's Tutorials and find them very useful.  But I am left with some confusion here and wondering if someone might be able to help.

It concerns the linear stage and keeping it there when using 'screenTransferFunction'. When I bring up an image saved in linear mode,  I get a blank/black image.  That is correct.  At this point Harry runs the 'ScreenTransferFunction' and he gets a really nice image.  But he is still in Linear mode.

I am trying to do the color calibration process and Harry says to keep the image at the linear stage.  That means that up in the left corner,  the GREEN vertical  line that would normally be along side the file name should be  gone.  I apparently need to keep it gone but as soon as I run the ScreenTransferFunction'  that green line appears. And I am out of Linear mode again.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

General / Flats, Darks, etc..
« on: 2016 December 20 08:13:57 »
Just trying to align and stack images here and one of the things I have tried to get right is the use of Flat, Dark, Bias, Light images.

Last night I took 10 light images at 3 mins each.  And than when I went to take the Flat images at 10 times each - I was told only ONE flat shot (image) was needed.  You don't need to go and take 10 images all over again like you did with the Light images.  Just ONE shot for the FLAT image is all that is needed.  Same with the Dark and Bias images.  Just one shot is all that is needed.  Anymore than that and you are wasting eveyone's time.

That is what I was told.  So I came home with no flat, dark ,  or Bias images.  I was sure I was previouly told that you take the same number of flat, dark, and bias images as you did with the light images.  Same ISO in all cases.  etc..

Is this true?  Have I been wasting my time etc..

General / Order of processing
« on: 2016 December 14 16:08:03 »

Now that I am getting to have a better understanding of PixInsight,  I am wondering what the order of what is done in processing an image.

In other words,  after your image is calibrated, registered, and stacked - what is the order of the other processes that follows.
like DBE, histogramstretch, hdrwavelets, etc etc...

What is the order.  Or is an order important?

But in general what is normally done after the images have been stacked and aligned?  What are the first few things that are done that are considered absolutely necessary.

General / DBE and Harry's Astro Shed
« on: 2016 December 13 15:18:47 »

Just a simple question here.  It concerns the tutorials produced by Harry's Astro Shed and in particular concerns  DBE.

The DBE tutorial finishes with the original image covered in little 'x's  and a new image which I guess is the product of running DBE. But how do you get the result of that run back unto the original.

In other words,  when you are finished running DBE do you forget the original image that you have been working on and therefor stay with the new image?  Or do you copy one image unto the other??

I know I am making this confusing when I shouldn't.  But would like to know how one properly finishes DBE.  It will put my mind more at ease.

General / color
« on: 2016 December 12 17:20:12 »

I am wondering how I can see color in M33?

What I mean is that when I process M33 as best I can using DBE and Color Calibrate and background neutralization and and others,  I end up with a black and white image.

And yet I tried this same image in PhotoShop and I got color almost right away. In any event when I was fiinished I had quite a nice image of M33 with a light blue color showing through the image.

So,  I bet there is a way to get color in PixInsight and when I do will it be correct?  In other words if it comes out red do I accept that as being the right color for M33?   Or Blue etc..

How will I know that I have the proper color?

Questions and questions.

Sorry..

General / Resetting things
« on: 2016 December 08 17:50:54 »
I have been messing around with various screen settings and now I am at a point that I can't get things fixed or back to how they used to be.

I would like to reset the configuration,  back to its original state when I first started PI.  I am hoping there is a simple command that I can type in or click in ,  somewhere.  It would really help if I could get back to the beginning on things.

Thanks.

General / StarAlignment and Flat/Dark/Bias Files
« on: 2016 November 28 06:34:47 »
I just started to use StarAlignment under Process>ImageRegistration.
I used just my Llight files and things seemed to work.

Now I have a bunch of Flat/Bias and Dark files and want to use them along with the Light files.  Do I just select ADD in StarAlignment and add all the files in that spot.  I mean all the Flat, Bias, Light and Dark files in one whole Bunch?

Thanks..

General / Batch Processing Script V1.43 using only light frames
« on: 2016 November 26 13:08:51 »
I am new to PixInsight but I am hanging in there.

I am trying to calibrate/align etc.  my pictures taken recently and the ones I am trying to use are only Light Frames.  No dark or bias and flat frames.
I set up the script properly (I think) in the Batch Processing area of PixInsight and I get errors such as the system can't find the dark or bias or flat frames.

I can't seem to get around this situtation and am wondering if its actually possible to stack a bunch of Light Frames only. ??

I know its a whole lot better to have at least some flat frames in there,  but I have none.  Does this mean I have to go to other software to achieve what I am after?

Thanks..

Tutorials and Processing Examples / Starting New
« on: 2016 November 16 15:17:51 »
Wondering what is the best way to start with PixInsight?    What I mean,  how to learn it.
I notice there are quite a number of tutorials around.  But is that the way to go?

Thanks for any input.
