General / Can't install Carlos development modules on PI 1.8.5
« on: 2017 September 13 13:35:59 »
Hi,

in the previous version (1.8.4) of PixInsight, I had Carlos Milovic's development modules installed, mainly the TGV and Intensity transformation modules (TGV-pxm and CMIntensity-pxm). But on the new version, I can't install these anymore. Is there any way to get these back? Will they be updated to the new core version??

Cheers,

Wim

Bug Reports / Adaptive stretch unexpected behaviour
« on: 2017 January 21 06:57:33 »
While I was playing around with adaptive stretch on a grayscale image that is to be used as a mask, I noted an unexpected behaviour.
Here are two screen captures of the issue.
The image is the L channel from an rgb (dslr) image of M45. The original image is a stack of 7 subs with full calibration frames. The stack is dithered and there is no indication of anything out of the ordinary with the subs. Dithering was approximately 15 pixels per frame, so what you see in the image is definitely no edge effect.
The original image had dbe applied, cropped to exclude edges and masked stretch + curves transformation applied.
After adaptive stretch of the L channel, suddenly a band appears in the middle of the image. It seems as if adaptive stretch was not applied to this area of the image.
Has anyone seen anything similar before and knows what can cause this?

Bug Reports / INDIClient caused PixInsight crash
« on: 2016 November 20 12:52:31 »
This is a FYI, rather than a plea for help.
Yesterday I used the INDIClient (CCD and device controller) when I lost my network connection. This caused a crash
My setup is:
Indiserver running on a Raspberry Pi connecting to my home network (Wifi)
INDIClient running on windows 8 on my Acer laptop.
The wifi adapter of my laptop has a very short range, and apparently I moved outside this. This caused me to lose connection to the indi server and PixInsight to freeze.
On another occasion the same night, the CCD client lost contact with the server and didn't disconnect properly. Closing the device controller in INDIClient, caused an error and crash.
I think that the error is caused by the CCD client trying to communicate with a device that isn't there anymore. I would expect the client to exit gracefully when losing network connection, or to simply time out with a notification.

Gallery / M31 through thin high clouds
« on: 2016 July 17 17:07:30 »
Collected the data for this image in January, but didn't process until now.

Equipment: Pentax K20D with 135 mm lens at f/5.6 on SW EQ3 Pro mount.
30 * 4 min exposures, flats and bias, but no darks
I din't dither for this image, and had to do agressive cosmetic correction and pixel rejection to reduce the streaks from hot pixels.
Very standard processing: DBE, CC, star reduction using MT, noise reduction using TGVDenoise (L*a*b mode, L) and MMT (chrominance), stretching and color saturation.

General / Image Window error message in batch preprocess
« on: 2016 February 27 04:27:48 »
Hi,

Normally I do my preprocessing in steps, but today I wanted to redo an old set of images and decided to use BatchPreprocessing.
Integration of Bias frames was OK, but when the script wanted to write the master Dark to disc, I got this error.
The Dark integration file was on screen, so I saved it as XISF and proceeded using this only. But what caused the eroor?
And more importantly; what can I do to not have it show up at all?

Cheers,

Wim

Image Processing Challenges / NGC1499 - what can be done?
« on: 2016 February 17 15:16:34 »
Hi,

During the few clear nights we've had in january, I managed to capture the California Nebula with my unmodded DSLR.
Over 2 nights I got 3 and 4 minutes exposures, of which I integrated 30.
Since then I've on and off tried to process them. An extreme STF shows that there is some faint nebulosity in the frame, but I've not been able to show this properly. Mostly, I end up stretching noise.
So here's the challenge; I hope that someone with better skills will have a go at it, and share some processing details.

Image details:
target NGC 1499
Camera Pentax K20D (unmodded), with 135 mm lens
Mount SW EQ3-2 Goto
30 * 3 & 4 minutes at ISO 1600
Preprocessed with darks, flats and bias frames.
Cropped, to get rid of stacking artefacts and some amp glow on the left side (middle of the left edge)
