Well done Jim. No doubt, there is hope for you  ;)
One more advice. Try to keep the background on your images dark grey (not black). Value of the background should be around 0,09 to 0,1.

Although too colorful for my taste, image is superb. Excellent framing and processing.
Nice work  ;)

Jim,

Your image is quite soft and definitely looks like you have a focus issue. So, getting the focus right should be your priority. Furthermore, you have a lot of chrominance noise, so be careful with that also. To reduce this chrominance noise I have extracted L component from your RGB file.
Processing on L component: HT, HDRMT, LHE
Processing on RGB: HT, convolution, color saturation

Next was LRGBCombination with chrominance noise reduction ticked.

Nice one Geoff. Processing of M 42 is always a challenge and you did it exceptionally.

Fantastic image.
How dark is the sky on this location?

Please, does anyone know how to blur an image? I need something similar to Gaussian Blur of Photoshop.
You can try by using the Convolution.

Tnx RickS,

Yes, those dark interstellar clouds are quite challenging to capture and to process.

Is this something that is generally considered worth it? (assume good data)

Yes, I believe so. As long as you use longer focal length for Luminence and shorter for RGB, you should get a decent result.

...so I don't understand why I shoudl scale to the big one?

Because if you scale larger FOV to a smaller one, you won't get seamless image.
