frozen when writing TIFF files
« on: 2016 January 03 18:53:42 »
Hi,

My PixInght version is 01.08.04.1195. The OS is OSX 10.10.5.

Under certain circumstance (will explain later), PixInsight gets frozen when writing TIFF files.  After showing the pink color TIFF warning (insufficient data storage capabilities), it just stops there without doing anything and all the buttons and menus become un-clickable. It can just remain in that state for many minutes if I do not do anything further.  (Usually it only takes 2 seconds or so to write a 16bit TIFF file.)  The way to wake it up is to right-click the PixInsight icon on the dock and choose to quit.  If I do so, a window would pop up and say that "One or more views are currently locked. ...... Exit anyway?"  If I click no, then PixInsight wakes up and it writes the TIFF file.

After encountering this numerous times, I seem to figure out what triggers the freezing. After I choose to save in TIFF format, there will be a pop-up window to show the warning about data storage capabilities of TIFF, then another pop-up window for TIFF options. If I just push the return key quickly to "OK" these windows, the freezing would happen.  On the other hand, if I just wait for a second or two for each pop-up window and then push return, then everything is fine and PixInsight can write the TIFF file smoothly without freezing there.

I don't remember I had encountered this in the previous version of PixInsight.

Cheers,
Wei-Hao

strange - this bug was previously reported on a version prior to 1195, and i thought Juan said he was going to fix it. i forgot to check if it had been fixed (this was happening to me all the time while saving files with an STF applied as .fits).

I cannot reproduce this on any platform, including OS X 10.10.5 and 10.11.2.

As Rob says, there was a potential freeze problem with dialogs open during manual file save operations in version 1.8.4.1193, but it has been fixed in the latest version. Are you sure you're running version 1.8.4.1195? (you can check it by entering the version command in the Process Console window).

Definitely, I am unable to reproduce this problem on any of our working and testing machines. I have been trying hard to reproduce it with images of varying dimensions and formats, without success.

Anybody else can confirm this problem writing TIFF images (or for that matter, any file format)?

I can confirm a similar issue on OSX El Capitan when writing XISF files.  It is random (so far) and requires a forced quit.

Some things in general are going on under OSX...simple things like Arrange Icons will arrange the icons off the right side of the screen.  This is somewhat repeatable in that it only happens after PI has been up and running for a while.  I often have multiple projects going on at once and am doing everything under the sun.  At some point, the arrange icon issues happens.  It does not happen when PI is first started.

I cannot reproduce this with any file format on our working and testing Mac machines. I'll keep trying today, running intensive tests on an iMac machine. If you can provide any repeatable pattern or additional information, it could be highly useful.

I cannot reproduce this either. Can you post a screenshot taken when this happens?

On OSX, open any image file.  Click File Save As...  Press enter quickly before the next dialog box comes up.  System will hang.

Here's a link to a short video demonstrating the icon issue:  https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=1EB2DE63A1E30B50!5708&authkey=!AFaMc_KKTX5S2Wo&ithint=video%2cmov

Download if it doesn't play in place (22MB)

I doens't happen right away...only after some significant activity in the program.  I'm running OSX on a MacBook Pro, 16GB, 1TB SSD, etc. etc.

No bug at all here. It's just that PixInsight's main window, as it is configured in the video, does not fit in your screen. Try closing one of the control bars at the bottom. For example, close the View Selector (View > Tool Bars > View Selector).

I hear what you're saying, but I am not required to change any control bar and it performs fine until the system has been used for a file (like I described).  Then for reasons unknown it doesn't behave properly.  If it had something to do with the control bars or the size of the screen then it would happen right away, correct?  I don't change the control bars, nor the size of the screen, resolution, monitors, etc... during processing sessions and it happens.

No big deal...I'll live with it.

Any update or fix for the OP on system hangs when saving files?  I provided details on how to repeat the error.

Thanks.
