PI 1.08.04.1195 on OS X
« on: 2015 December 27 06:18:14 »
I noticed that the PixInsight logo on starting the application as well as under Resources --> Acknowledgements... is not displaying as it does on Windows 8.1.  The logos are nearly half their size for some reason.  Not a major issue at all, but a minor bug someone might want to look into.

I'm on OS X 10.10.5 using a MacBook Pro Retina 2013 model and this issue occurs on the native display as well as my external Thunderbolt display.

Very strange. We can't reproduce this issue on any of our Mac machines running OS X 10.10.5 and 10.11.2 with both Retina and normal resolution displays. Are you using a scaled video mode? Are you sure you're running the latest version 1.8.4.1195?

Nope, not scaled.  As the heading indicates I'm using the latest version.  This also happened on the prior version.

This is weird. We cannot reproduce this problem on any of our machines, including a new iMac 5K with OS X 10.11.2. Anybody else is seeing this problem on OS X with Retina displays?

This could be caused by wrong settings. Can you check after a full reset of core application settings? This can be done as follows:

- If you are running PixInsight, exit the application.

- With Finder, locate the $HOME/Library/PixInsight folder. Remove this folder.

- Launch PixInsight. It will run with a new set of factory-default settings adapted to your hardware.

Just a word of caution - If you have moved your license file (pixinsight-license) to $HOME/Library/PixInsight, then DO NOT remove this folder. Strictly, only the PixInsight.plist file has to be removed on this folder to perform a full reset of core settings.

~/Library/PixInsight contained only the PixInsight.plist file.  My pixinsight-license file is in /Users/<username>/.

After deleting it and restarting PixInsight the same issue on startup exists.

As a test, I disconnected my Thunderbolt display from the MacBook Pro and just launched PI on the native Retina display.

Works just fine:

...however...as soon as I exit PI, re-connect the Thunderbolt display, the issue returns.  The Dock icon (right-click on the dock icon --> Options was set to assign to Desktop on Display 2 (which is the Thunderbolt display).

I've tried changing those options to Desktop on Display 1 (Retina), All Desktops, and None to no effect.

My two monitors are stacked one above the other with the MacBook Pro Retina native display on the bottom, the Thunderbolt on top.

Juan,

The issue appears to be with dual monitor systems.  I've just tested again using an external ViewSonic display and see the same issue.  Do any of your Mac test machines have dual displays?

I can't seem to find the forum post, but I remember something about PI only supporting side by side configurations. Try that and see if it works.

EDIT: perhaps this is what I am remembering but it is so old I have no idea if it still applies

This is the relevant quote "Multiple monitors are assembled as a single row. PixInsight's workspace cannot be spreaded vertically."

I have virtually the same equipment and OS as rjbokleman, and everything is working properly. The monitors are side by side.

yeah i have two old apple 30" monitors side-by-side and PI has always worked fine for me, though of course these are not retina displays so i've never seen any of those issues.

Russ,

I don't think you have the same setup.  Notice how your larger physical display (Thunderbolt) has the white banner (menu bar).  Mine is reversed as the laptop display is primary.

Juan, if I swap the menu bar (white banner) as shown in the screenshot Russ uploaded, by dragging that white banner to the physically larger display (Thunderbolt) the logo issue is resolved for both application start and the acknowledgements.  Once that's done, it doesn't matter whether the monitor arrangement is side-by-side or top-to-bottom.

Could it have something to do with the Retina display being primary (menu bar) @ 2880 x 1800 and the Thunderbolt display being limited to 2560 x 1440?

At any rate, glad we got to the bottom of this for you.  Try moving your menu bar to the laptop/smaller display and see if you can reproduce my cropped start up logo and/or acknowledgements dialog.

Bottom line is if the Retina display is Primary (has the white menu bar) the startup logo and acknowledgement screens will be cropped.  If your external display of lower resolution is Primary, the logos will appear normal.

Works fine for me on OS X 10.11.1, with the larger iMac 5K Retina as primary and a smaller Dell 2407 as secondary.
