The restoration tool is a nightmare to use :-\
I can't even achieve the start of the beginning of sharpening an image. I tried several noise models, did a lot of trials/errors with many different parameters tweaking and the only thing I'm success with is generating artifacts or blurring the picture.

Did someone already had successful results on sharpening linear deep sky datas ?

Carlos

I'm having the same issue as Jim. I'm running Windows 7.

Tromat,

Were you able to get better results using the Deconvolution tool?  If so you may want to try importing the setting from it as a test case.

Best,

Jim

Yes I'm pretty confident with the deconvolution tool, the problem is there's about nothing in common with TGVRestoration.
The only similarity is the PSF section.

I don't know what noise model to use, Poisson is supposed to be useful but I can't achieve any kind of sharpening. There's no "sharpen more or less" slider or value.

Hello
When will you be able to include these new tools via the update on all OS ?
There is a while there is no more development on these promising tools
cheers

Hi Phillippe

Yes, I know I've been away from these tools for a while. But, I have not been away from development of TGV related tools at all. In the past months I've been doing some research on automatic calculation of the optimized parameters in TGV problems. Now I have a couple of predictors that are correlated with lowest mean square errors in the reconstructions (or noise reduction) and also have the functions to calculate the functional costs to build L-curves (https://www.sintef.no/globalassets/project/evitameeting/2005/lcurve.pdf). I plan to introduce both estimators in the next release.
Also, I performed some exhaustive research on the error maps, varying both the strenght and edge protection parameters. I think that I have a way to simplify the implementations, to make them more user friendly. In a nutshell, I found a way to use a change of variables that allows the user to explore the changes in the direction of greater impact on the result, while the other direction has the lesser impact. So, we may merge the parameters into one critical new parameter, and a couple of "advanced parameters" that I plan to make accesible in a cleaner way for fine tunning.
On other fronts, not that much related with our astronomical images, I have expanded the functions to work with 3D data (data cubes). This is useful for biomedical images mainly. And, I have builded a TGV-QSM function that helps to find magnetic susceptibility measurements in the brain. I know, quite a lot off-topic here, but this is my main research front at the time.

Anyway, I'm trying to reassign some time to development of tools for PI. I have to attend a big conference next month in Singapure, so I'll try to have something new in the next weeks before leaving.
Regards,

Carlos Milovic F.

Hi Carlos
Thank you for your answer !
I appreciate your hard work to match mathematical analysis and/or scientific approch !
I think new algorithms are very complex and we need to "enter" deeply inside to understand what we can do and if it is useful for astrophotography processing !
I will wait and test your next release when available !
Cheers

Carlos,

When you get back to working on these, please note the bug I reported in TGVRestoration early on in the thread.  Seems to be a common problem based on Mike's reply.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, I'm sorry! I did not see that post earlier. I'll take a look at the code. Right now I'm rewriting the interface of TGVDenoise. I'll try fo fix that bug in TGVRestoration before sending it to Juan for review. I'll redesign TGVR after discussing the changes in TGVDenoise with Juan.

Jim, I think that I fixed that bug. I'll confirm this when I'm able to compile the code and test it. :P

Carlos sounds great.  It would be great to some way to evaluate the results
I have been playing with TGVrestoration lately. Real cool process.
