Access violation exceptions on Windows10
« on: 2015 August 09 06:27:15 »
Since upgrading to Windows10 I've been getting frequent but unpredictable access violations when launching various processes.
Once I get the exception the process won't start again until I restart PixInsight.
Could be a 1.8.4 issue as only used it couple of times before upgrading Windows but didn't notice the problem before upgrade.

*** PCL Win32 System Exception: At address 00007FFDC23BA1C8 with exception code C0000005 :
Access violation: invalid memory read operation at address 0000000029253931
<* failed *>

So far have had it running SuperBias, ImageIntegration and ABE.

Windows 10 Home 64bit
Intel Core i7 2.3GHz
16GB memory
PixInsight 1.8.04.1171

I can't reproduce these problems on Fedora 19 and Fedora 20 Linux, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1.

Quote
Access violation: invalid memory read operation at address 0000000029253931

This happens because PixInsight cannot access memory at the specified address, or because the memory read operation is reported as unreliable or wrong by the system. Typical causes of this problem include:

- Hardware errors. Check if your RAM is working properly (for example, with the memtest program).
- Antivirus/firewall programs blocking access to memory or disk.
- Malware infections.

Getting memory violations under windows 10 and PI 1.8.4.1171 while doing ABE.

XPS13, 8 gb MEM

???

Really doubt it is a memory problem or antivirus problem

Help appreciated

(Note: never had any crash on my other machine, but I have not updated to the new version)

Juan

If you cant reproduce the problem in different environments, it may simply be a problem of the current release of PI with Windows 10.

That seems a lot more likely than a hardware problem (or even an antivirus problem)

TIA

P

I would tend to assume the same, but there are users that have reported no problems on Windows 10. Most (all?) of the problems seem to be associated with upgrades from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Success cases seem to be associated with clean Windows 10 installations.

Anyway, I have no Windows 10 machine at hand now (I am on vacation, or sort of...), so this will have to wait until September. As for problems caused by antivirus applications, device driver conflicts and operating system 'upgrades'... you might not believe the things that I've seen in more than 10 years.

+1 on Harry's comment, but with a caveat.  I have upgraded to Windows 10 and have run all of the processes mentioned as the ones causing problems (ABE, Superbias and ImageIntegration) without issue.  Note however that's on my desktop running:

Intel i7 3.6Gb
32Gb ram with 16Gb ramdisk
Windows 10 pro64
Version 1171

As soon as Microsoft lets me, I will be upgrading my laptop which is much closer to the system rbamford has and will report if there are issues with that one once I get set up.

Best,

Jim

Hi

My machine is a new Windows 10 machine. Barely 10 days old.

i7, 8GB memory

P

PS: I have often looked at memory utilization by PI (on my other machine). Never got above 6. But then I just sampled it.

If you want to help me diagnose and fix these problems, please try the following:

1. Download the following zip file:

https://pixinsight.com/update-test/20150827-corelibs.zip

2. Uncompress it on any folder.

3. Copy all files extracted in step 2 to the following folder, replacing existing files and folders:

C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin

You'll need administrative rights to do this. If you have installed on a nonstandard location, change "C:\Program Files\" as appropriate.

Let me know if this patch fixes all of these issues with version 1.8.4 on Windows.

Hi All

I am getting the same error on my main unit since I upgraded to latest version.
I was running windows 8.1 until Friday and only encountered problems using the unsharp mask.
I upgraded with full clean install to win10 and latest PI again.  Same issue with unsharp mask but aslo now occurring occasionally when I have a form with expandable section.  When I try to expand error is thrown.  Restarting PI solves form issue but the unsharp issue remains constant.

If it helps I will run the tool mentioned.  To summarise all fine on previous version as soon as upgrade to this version unsharp mask issue.  Upgrade to windows 10 and adds form issue.

Any help appreciated.

Paddy

Hi Juan

Followed your procedure. I guess you have changed the Qt5core.dll (whatever that dll is).

Unfortunately, the issue was not fixed. I still get memory violations....

I redid the procedure. I think I had copied everything in the root folder, not the bin folder. So I re-copied in the bin folder....

Seems to work !!!

 :D

Now my install is a mess (I have the new bin files in 2 places: the root folder and the bin folder.... But I guess this does not matter much unless you have different files with the same names in these two folders, which would be a bit crazy...)

Will try to do more processing in the next few days and give you some feedback

Thanks

P.
