Monitors Again
« on: 2015 March 13 07:48:30 »
Back some time ago I posted about wide gamut monitors about the time I bought a used NEC MultiSync LCD2490WUXi. Juan posted that they used several Dell U2711 Ultra Sharp monitors and since then I've searched for them. It appears, as is always in the tech field, these were replaced with newer versions. The question always needing consideration is if the newer units are as good as the older ones. My experience has shown me that newer isn't always better nor is more expensive always the better choice.
You can spend as little as $200 for a 27" monitor and then as much as you want. The new 4-5K monitors go for up to several thousand. But from what I've read few can display at full resolution at 60Hz refresh. I looked at a MonoPrice unit highly reviewed by Tom's Hardware and it was the only one capable at the time of 60Hz. See http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/monoprice-4k-monitor,4055.html At $699 it sounds like a steal. But then again how good would it be for processing astro images? The chart comparing similar units of different brands for sRGB and RGB levels achieved is here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/monoprice-4k-monitor,4055-6.html I've seen the Dell specs on the 27" covering 99% of sRGB but then again it becomes a question as to when does it stop being concievable as to what you can physically see? I know higher is better but when do you have good enough versus the best you can get? Is the extra worth the expense or is it money just spent for bragging rights?
Ideally I'd love to be able to have my images opened on the desktop with as much visible at one time. The best I can achieve with my NEC is a 1:3 ratio and that has some border. The image size is 4008x2672 pixels binned 1X1. This is the STL-11002M SBIG camera. Native resolution for the NEC is 1680x1050.
Always looking for some solid advice.

Thanks,
Steve

My 2cents.
I have an U3011 at home (30", 2560x1600) and is a delight. At the office I have an very old HP LP3065 (discontinued). Also good, but the Dell one is slightly better.

I have U2408WFP model for years already, very good screen.
When thought on upgrading to larger screen specifically to work with PixInsight went for U2713H model and love every moment to work with it.
Very happy with Ultrasharp monitors.

Thanks guys. I checked Dell's website and they have it at $849. Newegg and some Amazon sites have it for $699, lowest I saw was $697.65 and free shipping. I trust Newegg and have been dealing with them for years so I'll go that route. What the Newegg reviews did indicate is that if you need Dell service it's a nightmare but the truth remains that it is probably the very few that have had terrible experiences that have posted as such. Now the more important thing is setting it up correctly. I have two devices to calibrate, a Spyder 3 and the Monaco OptixXR that came with my NEC Multisync. It would be great to have a reference sheet explaining all the steps necessary to make sure PI is optimized with the monitors.

Thanks Again

My monitor came calibrated from the factory.
Not saying that it is a good practice, but I never bothered about calibration with it.

Thanks Carlos,

How do you have your color management setup? I suspect this could make a difference. The issue I've had is when I process an image the way I like it with a bit more background showing, not the really dark that some seem to prefer, it shows up as lighter then intended on other monitors. I had been posting two versions, my wide gamut display image and then the same image adjusted for the other monitors. I have my color management setup screen attached. Any suggestions are welcomed.

I just finished talking with David at B&H Photo in NY and he steered me to the BenQ GW2765HT 27" LED monitor. While I'm not familiar with BenQ I did do a quick review search and they get high marks on this monitor. What also impressed me was the price, including expedited shipping, of $399 while Newegg has it at $699. Still not overly comfortable David mentioned the 30 day return policy and I saw no reason not to see what this monitor is all about. A link to their website and monitor is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1078513-REG/benq_gw2765ht_27_led_screen.html#pr-header-back-to-top-link

I'll let you know what I find out first of next week. Will ship tomorrow!

Hi Steve

Sorry, I did not see your previous post. I have left everything on sRGB. I'm no expert in this, but I think that leaving all on sRGB just makes it more compatible with web sharing.
