Comet Alignment Question
« on: 2015 January 08 13:28:36 »
I bet the comet alignment process is getting a lot of use right now!  :)

I've watched Harry's and Warren's videos on Comet Alignment and it all makes sense, but one question I have:  the comet alignment tool takes registered images as an input -- however, if focal length or exposure is high enough, there are no stars to register to as they are all streaks.  In these situations, should I just use the calibrated images? (field rotation could be an issue, potentially).

For fun I took some 30s, 60s, 120s, 180s exposures and the only ones I can star align are the 30s and 60s.  I haven't worked it exhaustively yet, but thought I'd ask what the best strategy here is.  Maybe I need a SmearAlign tool.  :D

The comet alignment tool assumes that you were tracking the sky at sidereal rate, so the stars are not streaks.  A normal star alignment yields images registered on the stars, with the comet moving relative to the registered stars.
