Problem with installing my licence data on a 2nd PC
« on: 2014 October 30 17:27:46 »
Hi,

I have the very latest version of PI (1.8.3.1115) running successfully on my Win8 desktop PC. I have now acquired a Win7 x64 laptop and am trying to get it running on this machine. However, copying and pasting the User ID and Activation Code directly into the appropriate fields generates an 'INVALID ACTIVATION CODE' error message.

Apart from the O/S difference, the only other obvious difference is that I have different account names on the two PCs.

Where do I go from here?

Paul.

Paul,

From the PixInsight FAQ page.

2.7 If I have to replace or format my hard disk, do I have to re-activate my license?
The PixInsight core application only asks for an online license activation if it can't find a valid license file. Your license file uniquely identifies you (the license holder) as a commercial PixInsight user. It is a very small file with the following name:

On Mac OS X and Windows:
pixinsight-license

On FreeBSD and Linux:
.pixinsight-license

and is located on your home directory (or home folder):

On Linux and FreeBSD:
/home/<user-name> or /usr/home/<user-name>

On Mac OS X:
/Users/<user-name>

On Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8:
C:\Users\<user-name>

where <user-name> is your actual user name on your operating system. If you simply copy your license file to the home directory of another machine you own, the commercial PixInsight application will run on that machine without problems. If you take the precaution to make a backup copy of your license file, then you'll never have to re-activate your license.

Alternatively, you can reactivate your license using our software distribution system. See FAQ 2.10 for details.
2.8 How can I install PixInsight on several machines?
You just have to copy your license file to your home directory on each machine; no license activation is required. Please read FAQ 2.7 for details.

Alternatively, you can reactivate your license using our software distribution system. See FAQ 2.10 for details.

Thank you, Mike. That did the trick.

I tried the FAQ page, got as far as 2.6, thought 2.7 was not my situation and didn't go further. I'm afraid my reading skills are not all that good.
