Best time in processing to use SCNR
« on: 2014 October 11 12:09:09 »
Hi:

when is the optimal time to use SCNR..linear stage?  nonlinear?

I know I should be after color calibration...but I've seen mention of issues with SCNR if you've applied a lot of smoothing to the image..so if I'm using noise reduction (ATWT/MMT in linear, TGVDeNoise in nonlinear)..should SCNR precede these steps?

I always use it after going non-linear, often after employing the LRGB Combination 'trick' that Vicent highlights in this video. I would keep the full amount of each channel (including green) until you hit the 'artistic' part of processing when non-linear.

thanks for the reply Josh.

so if I'm processing a OSC RGB image, SCNR ought to come after color saturation (using curves transformation) tweaking?

I think that would be best, yes. I haven't heard that any other time is better!  :)

Only time I use in the linear phase is when processing narrowband images in the Hubble palette.  For RGBs I use after stretching.

Best,

Jim

Jeff,

I rarely use it before stretching. Most of the times that only causes issues. After so many hours of processing I now tend to not use it until the end of my processing.
