Macintosh Version
« on: 2008 July 18 17:37:15 »
Hello PixInsight Development Team,

I understand a Mac version was expected some time this year. I'm curious as to the progress
for us "other side"  ;o)  users?

With Thanks,
Mark V

Hi Mark,

Yes, my intention is to release a first version for Mac OS X during this year. However, I'll tell you the truth: unfortunately, this is going to be very difficult.

There are two main reasons. One is that PixInsight is not selling well. We have sold too few licenses as to face the necessary investments (machines, development tools, etc.). The second reason is that I am alone to develop and maintain two platforms and four different versions (Linux and Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit). Adding Mac to this scenario scares me for now.

I thought that things would be different, that PixInsight would be a much greater success, and that I wouldn't be alone. But this is being an extremely difficult task, much harder than what I was able to figure out, and we have very little support beyond our users and the people in this forum.

But this doesn't mean that I've dropped the project of writing a Mac OS X version, by no means. It just means that it will have to wait more than initially expected. I am definitely convinced that Mac OS X is an essential platform where the PixInsight project has to be present.

For Mac users, my advice is to install and use PixInsight under VMware Fusion. Some users have already followed this path, and they are quite happy with the performance and functionality of PixInsight running on virtual machines. After all, PixInsight is being developed now mostly under virtual machines - only the 64-bit Linux version is being developed natively; the rest of Linux and Windows versions are being made under VMware Workstation.

Thank you for your interest, and please accept my apologies for not being able to offer something better.
