did you decompress with

tar -xzf PI-linux-x86_64-01.08.00.1070-20131214-c.tar.gz

OK, sorry about all that. I got it.

I did not extract using the terminal. In the file browser I right clicked and chose 'extract here'

Apparently that makes the files not work?

Sorry to say but there something to just walking up to a Windows machine or Mac and doing all of the navigation and installs using a point and click interface.

Glad you got it. There's no question that there's a price to pay using Linux. But I'm getting about 60% better performance in PI on Ubuntu than when I boot into OS X on the same machine. For that I will accept a little confusion  :D

Of course now it is telling me there is not enough space. Back to moving partitions around.  >:(

Chris, you may check that the installer file has the executable property enabled. You may do that by right clicking on the file, and then going for the properties, in the file explorer you use.
