File Explorer and external drives

I'm sure I'm missing something incredibly obvious - but how do I get File Explore to see external drives?

what platform?

edit: if macosx, turn on hidden files (either click the little ".X" icon next to the lock and wrench icon, or control-click and select "show hidden files"). then your external disks are in /Volumes/ .
